You'll guess by my last topic that the 202 aint staying around much longer, however, i wouldnt mind finding out what's stopping my RED 202 from keeping the smiles coming. Here's the situation...

Stock standard RED 202, electronic dizzy setup, 350Holley on Redline manifold (properly tuned) and a set of pacemakers into 2 1/4 exhaust system.

THE PROBLEM: She just wont rev. I am not brave enough to rev it to within a single RPM of its life, but its having major troubles getting over 4500RPM. It'll get up there really quick, but hits a brick wall right there! What could it's problem be?? My first thought would be valve springs, what do you guys rekon??

P.S. Its not gonna be in my UC much longer, but it'd just be nice to know wtf is wrong with it.

Hey Keith,

You're lucky to get 4500RPM out of a stock 202. When brand new (30 years ago), mine (well Dad's back then) had been known to hit 4500 occassionally, but it was screaming at that. At 27 years of age and with 200,000km under its belt, it use

Just out of interest, is 4500rpm for a 202 (blue) damaging? I religiously only ever push hard to 4000rpm, but very rarely 4500.

Same deal with the blue tho, struggles past 4500, even with a rebuilt eng.

Alright... Fair to say im not the only one!! I've taken the old girl to 5000RPM before, wont do it too often!! Brand new lifters (run them in for about 2000km first), took her down the strip after inspection of the rest of the valve train and confirmat

After the injected conversion my 202 would go well over 5 grand don't know how far I was too busy keeping it on the road to watch the tacho.

The main reason that stock 202's don't like to rev much past 4½ grand is the cam. It is designed to give good torque so you don't have to rev the hell out of it. Also, the stock heads don't flow very well (this applies to all stock Holden Red Motors)
