The t400 auto in my old 74 starts off in 2nd gear when you take off. If you nail it or give it say 3/4 throttle it will start in 1st, otherwise in normal driving it only ever uses 2nd and 3rd. Any ideas or experience with this? Doesn't seem to be normal? Oil and filter have been changed, and the vacuum modulator seems OK (holds vacuum).

have you checked the vacuum line all the way to the manifold?

Yeah its all ok to the manifold. Has the original steel line and hose at each end.
