Hi folks, I've just picked up a good low milage VP Berlina with 165kw V8 and auto. As it will be my 'work car' I'm not planning on spending any money on it that isn't needed. However (!) I'm looking at cheap performance mods that are actually worth the trouble and money to squeeze a bit more out it. I'm thinking along the lines of new chip, cold air intake, improved exhaust etc. What's the best exhaust diameter/muffler type, should there be 2 mufflers as well as the cat? It's my first injected V8 so its all new to me so far! Any ideas or tips appreciated. cheers, Ben

The best value fix is:
Cold air box. Modified exhaust. Knock sensor. 180/185kW HSV chip. |

Thanks Byron, About what I had in mind, but what about the knock sensor, what's it do? (Don't say sense knocks!) I assume it's more of a safeguard than a performance fitting. cheers, Ben

It's definitely a performance item. It allows the ECU to advance spark a lot more, as it has the ability to detect pinging via the knock sensor. If you don't have it there is no point fitting a HSV memcal. |

Thanks Retro and Byron. Why does the V6 have one and not the stock V8? Is this because the V6 is already squeezed for extra power so as to req one while the V8 in standard form is fairly tame? Ok, so I've got the exhaust, the cold airbox, memcal on way...

The wiring loom for the V8 is a special patch harness, available from HSV via a Holden dealer (about $30). I think the knock sensor is different between V6 and V8 (ask at a dealer). |
