I am seeking information on the mst effective carby for near standard 253 red. Is currently running 600vac sec holley but is really a slug. Was thinking of going to 2 barrel or standard 4bbl rochester. Any help would be appreciated.

Anything from a 350 holley, 465 holley or a quaddie should do quite well, the latter being a personal preference!

The general consensus is to run a Quad/Rochester, jetted for a 253 ! I have a 350 Holley on one that works a treat in a 4 speed, and can get 27MPG on a run. I also run a Stromy too - argh !!! They work but gee they guzzle the juice in traffic. Check ebay

Can anyone let me know the correct size of the jets for a 253? Is it a big job to install them?

In my experience, the 465 holley is a good carby to use on the 253 as the primaries are operating under low throttle, and the secondaries only open under heavy throttle, so they can be - at times, better than a 350 holley which can also lead to better fue

A vacuum secondary 390cfm Holley 4 barrel are also OK. I had one of these on a ski boat with a (shock horror) 351 Cleveland in it. Worked a treat, and was very economical plus heaps of low down grunt. Added bonus was it was on the secondaries whilst you w |

so I take it from all of this that a 600cfm 4bbl holley is probably too much carby for a 253. I will look into something smaller and see how thingsgo. I am looking for a good compromise between power and economy but I feel that a red 253 running premium

How old is the engine? It is likely that the cam is worn out. Replacing the cam & lifters, using a timing set that you can dial in and a new oil pump (a must), plus HEI (blue/black V8) ignition will also liven it up a bit. 600cfm as a sqaure bore is reall |
