My VP starter motor does not engage fully especially when cold it sounds like an old Falcon as it grinds away at the ring gear.

Anyway I thought that I'd just whip it out on the weekend to clean & re oil the pinion shaft WRONG!

I unbolted the thing but it won't come out due to the steering rack/flywheel inspection cover gap not being big enough. I resorted to the manuals. One told me virtually nothing & the other told me to remove the LH exhaust manifold, steering rack & inspection cover (a bit drastic in my opinion).

I resorted to grabbing the pinion, pulling it out & spraying WD40 on the shaft but I'm sure that this fix will only be temporary.

Is there an easy trick to removing the starter motor? I'm thinking that unbolting the left engine mount & lifting the engine a little may do it has anyone tried that one?

If it does do it again can you clean and oil the shaft or am I up for a new starter motor? It's a Delco starter motor with a Chinese or Korean sounding name written on it too not the VN Bosch style.

Unfortunately it's an auto. The flywheel inspection cover is a big cast iron thing that is also a brace that bolts onto the sump bolts so removal of this would be a real PITA.

Well the Wd40 method did not work as it's still grinding away So it looks like I do have to remove the starter motor.

Ahh well I removed the starter on the weekend removing the 2 nuts that bolt the LH engine mount to the K member & jacking the engine up until the exhaust hit the floor gave me a ton of clearance to remove the starter motor. Now I just have to see if parti

drop the 2 bolts for the power steer rack, or take your exhaust manifold off (either seems to take 5-10 min)
its the inside of the solenoid that will be sticking.
pull the centre out (plunger) give it a rub with some emery paper, and lube it up with DRY

Thanks for that. Lifting the engine a little was far easier than removing the exhaust manifold or steering rack would have been.

I did clean the inside of the solenoid & then oiled it with light oil but alas it did not fix so I went out & spent $122.40
