I'm in the process of replacing the clutch in my VP ute, and have just drained the transmission fluid. The old fluid appears to be auto transmission oil??? I'm aware that a T56 uses auto transmission fluid, but what about the T5? I was recommended to use Castrol VMX80 in the T5 box. Should I go with the VMX80, or is auto transmission fluid better? The box itself appears to have been working okay up till now, bar the very slight grating when putting the vehicle in reverse due to clutch wear. |

I can't say about Holden T5's but Ford T5's definitely run Dexron in them. A mate of mine had his EA serviced once by a Toyota dealer & they replaced the ATF in it with gear oil the gear shift became very stiff to say the least. |

Thanks Jim. I've taken a punt and gone with the VMX80. It's a very thin fluid, not unlike ATF, but with a bit more "slip" to it. Seems to be working fine so far, with smooth shifts. |
