Hi all

Over about 10 years I have had almost as many wheel alignment jobs done on my HJ ute, they have been pretty good but more recently they have been way off. Years ago, I was told that because there are no shims left on one side, that I would have to get the chassis rebent however since then other people have said it is spot on anyway!! (so no need for chassis work!) The last time I had it done they reckoned the settings were spot on - they took it for a test drive, realised it pulled to the right and rechecked the settings but said they were still spot on and that I would need a specialist to look at it since there must be something bent...or stuffed. He reckoned it might be a tyre pulling it and swapped them over to no avail.

So I went home and got a measuring tape and measured the distance between the two tyres groove to groove front then back and it was out 1cm, so I adjusted the drivers tie rod myself so that at least the tyres are parallel and it drove heaps better.

I guess my question is, is this just as good as using special equipment assuming caster/camber is correct? Or can someone advise of a good place in Perth to go where thay know what they are doing.

thanks

Andrew

If you've made them parallel it means you have zero toe in, which is not right on a HJ from memory. The chassis may also be cracked. Have a very close inspection around the rear welds on the rear of the lower control arm rear mount (on either side). HQ-HX

Hi Richo,

As Byron said, it isn't quite right. They should have 1 - 3 mm of toe-in.

Where in Perth are you? I know a couple of competent places to have wheel alignments done in Midland.

Cheers...Dave

Dave,

Hopefully they're better than the fiasco you had here in Melbourne.
