in regards to using a holden 6 your better off using a 186 or maybe a 179 these engines had steel cranks so revs and reliabilty isnt an issue only problem with holden reds is the head set up, using a blue motor head will give you 12 ports instead of the s

Not all 179 and 186 had a forged crank - ALL pre April 1967 red sixes had one. After that only the 161S, 186S, 3300X/CK and possibly the 173S engines had the forged crank.

if you buy a yella terra blue head they give ( usally) the compontry to adapt the blue head to the red block or you could buy the kit from a speed shop i didnt know the 161s and 3300s came with steel cranks just thought 149,179,& some hp 186s had them tha

My stuff up in above post - meant to type 3100X (not 3300X) - this is the early LC XU-1 engine which later became CK. I can't rememeber if any of the JP engines had steel cranks, but I don't think so, particularly since the 3.25" stroke cranks were introd |

Hi Guys.
Just to clear up the availability of the red motor forged crank.
AFAIK it was fitted to:-
All motors prior to April 1967, after that only 186'S' HR/HK/HT/HG & 186 XU-1 LC (both 3100X & CK) used them.
I can find no reference to it bein |

The LC parts manual agrees with you, wrt the fact that a separate crank is not listed as a spare part for the 2600S or 2850S, however the replacement bottom end is listed as a separate part for both engines (also for the 186X) - that is what I originally |

Hi Byron.
Yes, in GM-H language a 'short' motor includes a camshaft. Also I think the main & big end bearings are of superior type for the 'S' engines.

I had a 179hp stroked to 236ci using a ford 221 crank. Crank needs to be balanced with holden ends and the internal wall needs to be machined to prevent crank from hitting and tearing a hole in your block. I ran a stage 4 YT head, with triple su's, have b

My self and brother but a red head on a blue block as we found it easier to manage and that the red head we had was from yella terra. the thing with putting red heads on blue blocks and vice versa is that the water jackets etc will noty always line up.

Measure the deck hieght at TDC then wind it down to Bottom Dead Centre. that should give you stroke lenght then you can work out what size it is

@ TDC height from top of piston to block is 1.4mm @ BDC height from top of piston to block is 94mm approx.
Does anyone know what mains / BE / rings I will need?

Well besides it has a huge 221 stamped into it? It is definitely not the standard 186 crank. Noticeably heavier, longer stroke & the block has been machine in numerous places...
Pistons as stated are not Holden either...

Dont bother with any holden six. They're too small. Start with a Hemi 6 and you will never look at an old dinosaur holden again..

Or a Chev 6 ie 292. But good luck fitting either of these into an early Holden particularly HD/HR
