Your coupe is a Goss isn't it? From factory they didn't have the GT style cap. They had a standard non locking twist cap that was painted white without the chrome surround. I think some also had a the locking cap like the one in the ebay add above painted body colour.

Hi Paul, thanks for the info on the cap, I will have a look around at my local wreckers if not well I have put a bid through and get one, and yeh I have the green and white Goss,a full resto inside and out, finished 3 years ago and looks nice, and your right they only had the painted twist lock, the GT style came with the car and thought I may leave it, its taken me 3 years to fix all these teething problems, owell its my hobbie, but almost there! I still have a problem with that temperature sender, it's still alright to drive it's showing a little warmer than usual, and the sparky thinks he knows what's the problem, (bad Earth)and he should be back to work after Easter after a long time off sick, I will let you know how it all goes,

Phil I just read this post and have warning for you.
The XA/XB coupes had a history og going up in flames.
An acquaintance of mine had his go up when being driven by his wife. being a 2 door you can't easily get access to the rear seats and unfortunately his two little kids were killed as his wife could not get to them for the flames and lack of access.
Apparently these were fitted with an early rollover surge system that was supposed to stop fuel coming out of the tank if the car was rolled. some were faulty and the surge system pumped petrol into the boot.
This particular car the owner had on several occasions found petrol in the boot, on one occasion it was apparently 2" deep.
This was not a used car he purchased it brand new and reported the fault to Ford on several occasions but they were never able to find the cause.
At the inquest several Ford bigwigs came over and swore black and blue there was no inherent fault in the system, although they did admit around 80 of them had gone up in the eastern states. I personally have had two cortinas burn while driving due to the fuel inlet pipe being a metal pressing into the Weber carby bowl coming loose and spraying petrol everywhere. Ford said that was due to faulty maintenance due to mechanics pulling the rubber pipe off the carby when servicing, thus causing the pipe to come loose.
he did have a pair of oxy acetylene cylinders in the boot and this was put down as the cause, but what's the chances? if there was an oxy leak and petrol got into boot I don't know what would happen but I do know it is not a good idea to have oil or grease anywhere near oxy.
presumably a better safety valve if that was the case was subsequently developed.
it all ended there.

We are getting off topic here but Ford finally relented and recalled those Cortinas in the early 80's. Trouble is most had either burned down or were not taken for the repair.

In the late 80's a mate of mine bought a 2 litre Escort which threw a rod after a couple of days. We went to a wrecker and bought an engine out of an early TC Cortina & fitted it.

A week later he was driving it when the hose came off and burned the car down.

The fuel hose has a tendency to spring into such a position that it sprays over the rocker cover and straight onto the exhaust manifold when it pops off.

Hello Johnperth, gee what a dam shame and horrible loss of life, very sad,,, I have no pump system in the car, but what I have done is that I went shopping at rare spares (my place to shop!)and got me some goodies but they never had the cap that I needed, so I had to settle for the one I wanted on ebay, I hope this is going to help what needs to be done, I will keep you all informed how I go, just waiting for this cap,

Hey Guys, back again to this topic, I have done what you have told me to do Paul, Bought the chrome cap, so I took off the GT cap and the outer ring, I have the chrome locking cap on the car and it seems to be doing the trick! yeehaa, so far! so I guess the other lines are ok (I hope) Therefore I guess the smell was coming out of the cap, I have been busy over the past few weeks but I will fill the car up soon and see if any fuel smell wants to escape that way, and take it for a drive and splash it around a bit, but I have not gone as far as cutting the cap to make room for the GT cap can be installed back on, but as I see in this moment in time its great! thanks Paul, and thanks to the rest of you guys with your great feed back!
