Have a look at the 2nd top post on this page. Based upon parts catalogue evidence this is my bet.

In summary Byron, you are saying that M trims are all cloth, N trims are XT8 all vinyl (delete cloth option), L have cloth seats & vinyl door trims & K have vinyl seats & cloth door trims ?

DD, back to the original question, what are the L (& K) trims on an HG Brougham.

I've seen what appeared to me to be black carpet in an otherwise Sandalwood interior, but I've never seen a mix of cloth & vinyl either.

I'm saying that is what the later revision documentation for the HG parts catalogue indicates. It sounds silly but all 4 x of these codes exist in various documents for 14 trim, and 3 x for 18 trim. There are a few examples of the 18L trim that I know of (1 x 7/70 Elizabeth Brougham and this car in this thread a 10/70 Dandenong Brougham). Deadfreddy's car has cloth seats and vinyl door trims, and an 18L trim code, and we know what the M and N are so I guess all that is left for K trim is vinyl seats and cloth doortrims?!? Git has the HG selling procedure and features manuals which will probably back most of this up too.

Remember this is a lets say educated guess based upon available evidence! The truth may yet be different.

Hi there, I know it's an post but would hope some one might come across, I have the same plates on my brougham which I'm about to restore, it is 100% complete, but the seats are stained and dirty, don't think they will clean up to well, I've had the car for over 20 yrs and know its full history, it's been untouched. I don't think it's sandalwood trim, much lighter. Has vinyl door trims with wood grain inserts. Front seat is a bench with fold down middle arm rest. Would like to know what the color is called, ivory, or just very faded sandalwood? Thanks.

Greetings, Aha! This could be the start of something good. Another 18L trim code. Warren Turnbull has a new book coming that has all trim codes in it. He will be able to solve this one for us at long last. I have yet to find a car with 18L that hasn't been altered from original. Have you got cloth trim on the seats? When you say the trim is much lighter than Sandalwood, what exactly do you mean? Is it like the HK Brougham blonde ivory perhaps? What about the arm rests? Headlining?

I am affraid I am going to disappoint you git, I do not have the answer to this one.

As Powell said about WMD there is the known, the unknow and the known unknown.

These 18L trims fall into the known unknown I am affraid. And this is not just Brougham, 18L was used on at least 1 very early Premier sedan.

There is always new information coming to light and I had to decide to stop at some point. Hopefully someone out there knows the answer to this and if they get a hold of the book, might be able to shed some light on these unknown things. (plus several other known unknown and unknowns)

An interesting one that came to light just before nailing the book down was the C trimmed HG Belmonts. These are cloth seats with HT Monaro insert doortrims. Very weird looking. These are limited edition 186L models, which were fitted with cloth trim, disc brakes and 186 engine, all produced in February and March 1971.

Greetings Detective, I've only got a narrow range of knowledge. I consider myself a guru in training (git, get it). Dr Terry is the guru on here.

Greetings Warren, I could helped out with the 186L HG Belmont sedans as they are in the features book. They came in three trim colours.

That HG Premier with 18L trim interests me. What colour is the seat material, door trims, arm rests and the headlining design? No 18L in the features book which is odd given all the others are included.
look out, the guru is coming through...

All sandalwood.

As you suspected, cloth seat vinyl door trims.

That's a bit overly generous Mr git, there are several others on this forum with plenty of input. Also as someone said, the more you think you know, the more you learn what you don't know.

Hi guys, I know this is an old feed but I have recently bought a HK with the 14K trim code as mentioned above by git and HK1837. Does anyone have any more info on this code at all?

It was Donald Rumsfelt that made the known unknowns quote,

Here's one of those nearly new now known unknown knowns, I have a 08/70 HG Brougham Sand-Blasted & Primed Rolling Body Shell.

plated as a 5 Seater

MODEL 81469GR
BODY No.116-H5
TRIM 1809-18L
PAINT 567-12191

Sydney Built.
Electra Blue (bits of paint in Tail-Light holes verifies this).

From what I have gathered the 1809 bit signifies Bucket Seats & 18L is Sandlewood with Cloth Inserts on the seats only.

The only piece of Brougham Trim that came with it was a Rear Seat Squab but it is in Black Vinyl so can't be original.

Since it doesn't have a matching engine with it & Electra Blue isn't my favourite colour anyhow. There's nothing in the rule book says that it has to be original in any other way.

Also, I'm educated guessing that it the original Bucket Seats would have been Recliners.

1809 is GM-H code for the Electra Blue Metallic paint. This tallies with the 568-12191 Dulux code.
