Maybe it's more like they have their agenda and in playing the pollie game, they like to sit far away as they can and then call the shots but if they come in too close or talk about it as in under the microscope in depth, well that's when the fur starts to fly. Old mate Senator Bernardi got pushed out the way for stating such things and then even his own party played the game of distance and just played the game of muddying the waters in what he was really putting forward. The imported cars did make GM lift the feature levels on Holden cars. That is where competition does improve product development.
Another issue could have been a GM plan. The easiest way to kill the Commodore was to stop building cars here. The Commodore does not have much of a market place any where else. Front wheel drive (sadly) seems to be the cheapest and easiest car to market to the masses.
