Hi Smitty.
You certainly have a wealth of personal insider knowledge of Holden!
I have a 5/70 HG Van which was first regoed as KST 093 in 9/70. HG00013A and Body 1A. It was retained by GMH for several years. I have researched it through AOMC and they came up with the original engine number and rego number. I have been told it is the HG Van Brochure car? I haven't been able to find any further info either from Holden directly or elsewhere.
Several years ago, a friend of mine from Oberon, showed a pic of it to the parts manager at his dealership and he said he remembered my van as they used it to ferry parts out to Lang Lang. He worked there in the 70's. I didn't get to meet him. I think it was the dealer at Bathurst.
In the late 90's I worked at Suttons Parts at Lidcombe and after I left, Rob Madden moved in as Warehouse Manager. I had many a conversation with Rob when I called to order emergency (overnight) parts from GMH (after the cutoff time of course).
In the LJ Torana Brochure there is a pic of an LJ GTR with a (Sudan Beige) Van in the background. Any possibility of info about that particular Van? Could it have been mine?
Any info you could elaborate on would be very much appreciated Smitty. I know it is a little before your time but you will never know if you don't ask..... Even a contact of someone who may know anything at all about my Van would be great.
TIA.

Ive just scored myself a VC SLE wagon Warren. Its been sitting in a paddock and ive been chasing it for about 2 years. The owner finally caved in to my constant badgering! ha.

Apparently only about 25 were made in the end as the head honchos stopped the program. A bloke on the just commodores forum who used to work at GMH in the early 80s said it was due to the wagons wheel arches being different and they couldnt properly fit the SLE wheels in there without massaging the lip. So they were never properly engineered and should never have legally been sold.

the issue was that the tyres fitted to the 15" alloys (sedan alloys by the way) on the VC SL/E wagons...
GM had a worldwide engineering policy on wagon tyres .... they needed to be a load rating much above the sedans
(except for Police BOY2 and BT1, Govt V6S and some fleet A9K and Country XW5 which also got upgraded tyres)

15" 60 series tyres (code QFL ) were only a 4 ply rating and QBC a BR60H15 tyre again designated for 69 style vehicles only

the other issue was... fitting a 15" wheel with a higher load rating tyre into the wagons' rear wheel well
without damaging the rear endgate washer pump and reservoir. It was proved trying this did cause damage ....

So there was simply no engineering approval in place to fit tyres intended (and approved only) for 69 style vehicles
to any wagon. Strictly... all SL/E wagons were illegal and Joe Whitesell nearly got Chapman to approve
scrapping the lot. All 50+ of them .... ! Sanity did prevail and there were some quick ECS bulletins written up
to cover a few people arses

final comment... it was John Bagshaw who originally thought up an 8VX35 SL/E wagon (it was only a 'nice to have' when VB came out)
but he nicked off overseas before tempers got frayed. Poor ol' John Loveridge got the job of sorting this and selling them ...

ps... dealer specials? don't forget the VS Commodore SLR/5000

Hi guys. VC SL/E wagon for sale at the moment. I hope it goes for more than 10k as mine already owes me almost twice that and its not even painted yet!! haha..

Every Cross8 or V8 Crewman after a certain date was a 6.0L.l. January 2006 I think it began. I imagine VSIII Statesman or Caprice with 179/195kW engine would be far rarer.

Them 179kw Statesman must of sold a fare few of them over the months.
It's the 195kw ones that would be rare.

I did asked if I could get the 195kw for my Nov 1999 VS Series 3 ute. only to be informed that they had ran out of them 195 engines by then, but he could of being telling BS as they do, because they are lazy as dogs that never want to do anything more than order simple stock crap.

So one could order a S ute with 195kw and I think it was $2500. but I thought it too much to really be happy to pay, so I thought oh well, when I could just get a chip and extractors and dual exhaust for that, but at the time I did not know that the 195kw had a bigger camshaft and different exhaust valves, knowing that I would of forked out more, but I thought it just like the old 185kw job just exhaust and chip job and air box snorkel.

I seen the 195kw Maloo ute on the showroom floor, it had a better quality air snorkel than my 179kw one that was a cheaper looking thing.
The Maloo had extractors going into a dual typical exhaust with only one cat.

We got ripped of with the 179kw ute having only a crappy single exhaust, they should of came with dual, as the 179kw VT did. maybe the 179kw Statesman's did get dual exhaust with manifolds ? I seen one Statesman series 3 V8 parked on the side of the road some years back, it could of been just a 185kw series 3 one.

Just looking at my series 3 catalogue it has a Olympic edition ute $3500 of extras in 3 colours P/W, 16in Alloys, etc.

And a ID Series VS series 3 ute there would be bugger all of them around, I have never seen one.

The press release for the VSIII Olympic ute said 1,100 were to be built. I don't know how many they actually built, often they build more if the demand is there.

The ID was a regular option for Vs from April 98 to the end of production. I have no idea how many were made.

If we are talking standard models, the humble HT80235 and 80269 would have to be close to the rarest. Less than and just more than 20 respectively of each built.

The few HG brochures that I have are very interesting. In the HG Monaro brochure the red car is actually a HK that has been touched/adjusted/photoshopped to look like a HG. The HG accessory brochure is full of HTs touched to look like HGs, most of the images come straight from the HT accessories brochure. The people in the photos are even the same, all that changes is interior trim patterns, badging and mold locations etc.

So I doubt your panel van was the brochure car as it is far easier to "touch up" the previous model. And Holden does this all the time, HR is HD, 72 HQ are 71 with headrests drawn in etc.

HQ Sandman brochure is the same. All the photos are caveman “photoshopped” images. There were so few cars built long enough prior to volume production to be used in sales brochures that GMH had to do it.

It was a 6 banger. Not sure on transmission etc. I just couldn’t believe it had a column shift Statesman interior!

The Brock Magnum ute, doesn't really cut it as a one-off or rare Holden. It was built/converted by HDT post production. It's not the same car that left the assembly line.

Hi Terry and all Happy new year.
Thinking outside of the square Terry but if we Say HDTs don't cut it then we should think about where HSV sits. Also other low volume houses out there which offered their own version of a Holden. The likes of Gardner,Corsa etc. Remember Adayer? I am sure there were others.
Cheers.
Nick.

Happy New Year Nick.

I think we should restrict our conversion to Holden vehicles which left the production line. Prototypes & racecars don't count.

Late HDT & most HSV vehicles are in a 'grey' area, because at least they drove off the Holden production with their driveline complete, but the vehicles themselves are still not complete at that point. Besides they are not badged or sold as Holdens, they are listed as being built/supplied by a separate manufacturer.

Just thought of another low volume car Terry. That Saffron Metallic HQ sedan you have, Kingswood Sports. They were very low build and although they were essentially just a group of available options like a Vacationer or Deluxe they did get unique trim.

I spoke to Noel Bedford about my HQ a number of years ago. He worked in the trim dept. in those days.

His recollection was that they had excess quantities of the Houndstooth cloth left over, so they made a whole batch of front & rear Kingswood bench seat assemblies & 'invented' the 'Sports Pack' to use them up.

He seems to think there were between 30 & 50 built. When I purchased mine (about 15 years ago) I didn't even realise that this was a 'Pack' of sorts.

I’ve only ever seen one newspaper ad for them. I wonder if they only went to selected dealers?
They did similar in HT and HG to use up past series trim, but in those cases it was Belmont sedans from memory.
Imagine trying to buy new trim covers for them when they were only a few years old!

I am guessing that when GMH ran low on Houndstooth in late 1972, remember the second batch of SS have raydo trim, they had to make an order of X amount, which exceeded what they needed for Monaro/Torana but ordered anyway and then used up excess with "sports".

I have seen a few of these over the years which makes me believe they made more than 50. And if only 50 then no need for a brochure, there is no brochure for HG 186L. There is also no brochure for VT Anniversary Calais (350) or VS Anniversary Statesman (250).

Yes single page flier.

One side shown with this car.

https://www.shannons.com...den-hq-kingswood-sports/

With 11 different trim colours I doubt it was very limited, if limited then you would only offer in one or two.
