Oooh a 2.78 pinion and 3.08 crown sounds bad to me too ! Should be a set. I'd be after a matched set pronto.
Also from LEFT field. Take the care to a DYNO. Strap the car in and take it up to speed. See if you get vibes at 3500. If you do, you know its

I may be off on a tangent, but what about disc runouts or wheel bearings. Can you feel the vibration through the steering wheel or on the floor or both etc. Do you get Peddle hop or anything like that ?
Cheers

There is more to steering than ball joints. You would be surprised what a small bit of looseness in the tie rod ends can do to your steering. Ball joints are more a suspension thing. Pedal hop is not always present.Did they check the rims for out of round

Thanks BYRON, I have tried another set of wheels with no change . I will do the Jacking up of the rear trick and see if the axle is bent .Do I need to be particularly careful with it being an LSD? |

No. Just make sure you have someone in the car ready to control it if it comes off the trolley jack or stands, and make sure there is heaps of space in front of it so if it does fall off it can be harmlessly stopped. Use 1st gear and idle only. |

I thought of this today, have you checked all the bodywork for loose panels like the front beaver tray (under the bumper) or other panels? It may be something that only vibrates at that speed because it is too tight or heavy at slower speeds.

Have you lowered the car excessively? This can increase the angle of the tailshaft to the universal joints and cause a vibration. (information came from a Mercedes Benz mechanic) If you have, a quick fix is to raise the back of the gearbox slightly

may as well add some more, you never know which bits can help :) rotational forces being what they are, the pinion angle needs to be slightly offset at rest as under loading of forward movement [of the car] the complete rear axle assembly will rotate s Edited by user Saturday, 8 October 2005 8:03:22 AM(UTC)

You explained it better than me, 70 ute. I only got the info in passing so I couldn't get the specifics but then I remembered a bloke at work about 10 years ago had the problem in his XR6 and Ford fixed it by shimming something in the drivetrain suppor

Thanks again guys. I did have the car lowered by fitting 4 new 20 mm lowered springs but this should lower the car the same all round shouldn't it ? Holdens looked good all through Bathurst so I never left the tv to do any more on the car . I have bought |

HQLDEN
20mm is not much to lower a car. It will still alter the angle of the unis as the engine has moved in comparison to the axle. I seriously doubt that this will be your problem due to the small amount lowered.
