12 months or more in gaol to whoever puts them on a car if caught. Be careful that person doesn’t roll over on the person who sold them to him/her either.

How have they been verified as Sandman tags? Very hard, almost impossible to pick a HJ Sandman ute from the tags alone.

This furphy resurrects every now and then.
there is no problem with removing the tags, they are not the chassis number.
the only identifying numbers on a car of this vintage is the chassis number stamped into the chassis.
the tags are only regarded as aids to identifying the model, upholstery, colour, year of manufacture etc.. as such they carry no weight .
there is a letter from the wa police several years ago saying this. if you wish to send a letter to the police in your area asking for clarification.
to make this point, about 10 years ago a rare rolls royce of the 30s had a rusting and damaged chassis laying around, a dealer cut the chassis number out and welded it into a better chassis and did a complete rebuild of the car, and sold it at auction for hundreds of thousands of pounds, the buyer discovered this and took the matter to the high court. the court eventually found there was no forgery the essence of the car was in the chassis number.
if you want get pedantic about it I have the write up in the london times. need time to find it tho..

If you put those tags on another HJ ute shell and advertise it as a genuine Sandman you may well find yourself in Civil Court for fraud. And you may find yourself in Criminal Court for interfering with a Safety Compliance Plate.
Have a look at the recent case in Victoria with faked cars. And the QLD Civil case with the rebodied GT - the reason the Plaintiffs didn’t appeal was the Magistrate warned them if they tried he’d refer it to Police and the Criminal system.

Victorian Road Safety Act, Section 72

"(1A)     A person is guilty of an offence if that person—

        (a)     forges; or

        (b)     fraudulently alters or uses; or

        (c)     fraudulently lends or allows to be used by any other person—

any vehicle identifier, engine identification number, identification plate, manufacturer's build plate or any other plate, label or mark that uniquely identifies a vehicle and sets it apart from similar vehicles.

Penalty:     60 penalty units or imprisonment for 6 months."

That's the civil provision. The Crimes Act includes the offence "Creating a False Record" That one is good for 10 years.

Furphy? There are 2 individuals recently dealt with by the courts who would take a different view.

For many years it was illegal to being possession of a compliance plate that was not attached to a vehicle, as this was the only plate that was involved with vehicle ownership/identification.

The law has been expanded to also state that you cannot falsely represent a vehicle. This one is interesting, because if I put SS badges on a standard commodore and try and sell as an SS that is falsely representing a vehicle. I have seen many a car like this advertised.

Either way if you place these on a car you are actually committing two offenses, the compliance plate is a rebirth and the body id/VIN is falsely representing a vehicle.

As wall art you are not likely to be charged with being in possession of a compliance plate.

As wall art, in a nice frame with some Sandman memorabilia, ie brochure, probably worth $100 to $200 to a fan for their man cave.

Assuming they are Sandman tags Warren. Almost impossible to pick a HJ Sandman ute from tags. Some you can if you have access to the Service/Warranty records and know them well enough. If it is a Kingswood Sandman, forget it. Only inspection of the body and really knowing the cars well will give it up.

Not always. Only a portion of them were stamped with either XX7 or XU3 plus Acacia Ridge made stuff all Sandman utes, mostly Pagewood and Dandenong with another considerable amount from Elizabeth. Acacia Ridge made far more van bodies as they were the only body plant apart from Elizabeth building van bodies, other than the 12 month period mid HQ that Pagewood were doing van bodies.
Yes if the body tag is from the Acacia Ridge body plant and has XX7 or XU3 on it, it was off a Sandman, but as I said not all Acacia Ridge Sandmans (or XV2 or XV4 or XW8) have the RPO code stamped.

WTF has what happened in the UK got to do with Australia??? Nothing!!!

In Queensland it is an offence to possess the unique identifiers of a vehicle without possessing the vehicle those unique identifiers belong to.
