hi...i have a hg monaro im rebuilding at the moment and want to power it with big block chev,i know its been done before but cant find any info on how and what has to be done to fit 1 so wondering if some1 on here could tell me how hard and where to find parts to do the job...thanks..p.s. im in new zealand so probably need to order the parts from oz and have not seen any big blocks in hg here

Been looking into this for my HK 327.
Firstly, big block will fit where the small block fits so gearbox and engine mounts sit in the same spot.
Youll need a big radiator, probably a 4 or 5 row HQ-HZ style would do.
Im looking at using a HQ-WB big block sump, so it will interfere with the drag link. So I plan to get a UC Torana steering rack mounted on the front of the crossmember and swap the stubs side to side. This will also solve the exhaust to steering box clearance issue you have with a big block in HK-HG.
Not sure how Im going to solve the bonnet and aircleaner clearance issue. Possibly a bonnet bulge rather than a scoop.
Apart from that it looks like it will all fit. Ill solve the accelerator linkage and heater box issues when the engine is in place.

as the above member has mentioned, it is a straight forward swap,but some work is involved. rack is the way to go,as original steer box will not allow you to make a decent set of pipes for it but it you use a LH-X UC Torana rack, you will not get full loc

as the above member has mentioned, it is a straight forward swap,but some work is involved. rack is the way to go,as original steer box will not allow you to make a decent set of pipes for it but it you use a LH-X UC Torana rack, you will not get full lock, as the pinion needs to be shortened to allow the shaft to be connected,and the ends of the rack need to be shortened and modified to adapt to the tie rod ends to match the stub axles you are using,therefore you loose full lock. the heater goes, regardless of what valve covers you use or height you may wish to place engine. booster can stay, wiper motor must be moved to inside of car as it fouls distributor. Pete Jackson or Jesel do make a front mounted dissy conversion kit which enables you to mount the dissy at the front of the engine like a cleveland or windsor, therefore eliminating the wiper motor clearance problem

Another alternative is to use a entire front end from a Jag XJ6, which will fit the HK-T-G rails with some mods, but it gives you power rack mounted in the front so you can use HQ oil pan, the brakes are HQ pattern should you wish to use the jag brakes, or HQ vented can be adapted to jag front,and the engine can be set up to sit on the front end low enough for you to retain heater box. Accelator is usually set up with a HJ-Z pedal, and an XB V8 Cable, which allows you to fit the cable into the pedal with the washr and rubber,and adjust the cable at the carby end and is a neat fit

If you use a LS6-LS7 type crate motor, they were available with an alloy low type inlet to help aircleaner to hood clearance for camaro and chevelle that did not have the factory "cowl induction" hood buldge in them as some 67-68 RS/SS Camaros and chelleves ran. Corvette of that era all had the L88 type hood fitted. if you use a GEN 5-6 engine, they run a standard height intake, (high rise and lower type intakes are available)a 14" x 2" recessed base air cleaner can be used with some mods to the frame of the hood

oh bugger think i might think about 350 stroker motor which would be pretty straight forward...what can a 350 be stroked to does anyone know and what sort of power can be produced from one...

377 is the normal stroker for a 302/327/350LJ block. This is basically a 400 crank in a 4" LJ block. The advantage of this is you can simply claim the engine is a 350. You can also use a 400 small block which are very torquey engines especially with stock length rods. Either the 377 or 400 will easily produce 400hp (example 377 http://store.summitracin...DBP3830CT1&autoview=sku) and even 450hp out of the 400 without too much drama.

persevere with fitting the fatty in the car. IMO, its well worth the work, big blocks are just effortless torque, and horsepower really is just torque over time..but, up to you in the end

Dont do it! Use a 400sbc, you will be alot happier believe me I know, my buddy had a LS6 powered ht monaro & it was a pain in the butt (overheating etc etc) not to mention the price of custom headers, frontend mods, oilpan , handling. Think 400 sbc!!....D

i remember a article on big small blocks, sbc dart block if im correct the oil pans rails were wider the cam moved up taller deck height 454ci very few would pic it, but i spose you would need a fat wallet.

would like some help if posible my uncle has a hk gts monaro
which he has just bought a 498 bb from my other which was in his camro.
if you have any pictures of this done
and also ideas on power steering options
what is needed to be done/modified

I ran 406 sbc in hk gts best both worlds sb weight with bb power if put gd higher compression heads. 400 bores simesed so they can run hot but 4 core took care of that. Always thought 4 inch block with 400 crank was 383 400 block with 350 crank equals 377

A big block would be good. Some good advice about getting the motor low enough so you dont have to cut a hole in the bonnet,nothing worse than a perfect bonnet with a letter box stuck on.It destroys the sleek look just an opinion not bagging any cars out there,allthough a camaro like bulge would look betteron a HG go for it.--cheers keeo
