Has anyone had a HQ front subframe and suspension control arms sand blasted and powdercoated before?

Are there any pro's or con's? What sort of cost to do in satin black?

cost wise would be slighty dearer than paint but end result would be worth the effort would last much longer and more durable as well

I got mine blasted and coated for $380. Here's a pic (hopefully).



Everything that is black is powdercoated.

According to an engineer I spoke to it is illegal to powder coat a chassis as it can crack, let in moisture and rust without being seen because of the strength were as paint will display tell tale signs more easily. If nobody can confirm or deny this then it may pay to check it out before doing the job.

havnt heard of that before i would think if chassis is going to crack either way you would be able to spot it not saying that this cant happen may well be correct have had a number of these cars and never had any drama with them even after powder coating or paint

Quite the opposite. I've used powder coating for a lot a car parts over the years & while they initially look great & often cost less than painting, after a year or two they start to look a bit ordinary. Most paints are more flexible & don't crack as badly.

I think that powder coating is too brittle & it will often crack (not the metal underneath) & then let water in. In recent years I've used different types of epoxy & urethane paint with more success. Even good old enamel will last a lot longer than powder coating. I think powder coating is more at home on non-mobile things like gates, fences & industrial machinery.

galvanising is a top way to go, helps protect from rust inside & out & can be painted over with no problems.
cost is about $2 per kg, I had a one tonner chassis done years ago including all the wish bones, crossmembers, cab mounts, inner guards, rad support & battery box & it cost about $350 in total, plus you get the advantage of the gal getting where sandblasting/rustproofing cant...

What I meant was the powder coat cracks (not the chassis) and lets in moisture and you cannot see the chassis rusting underneath and as mentioned by Dr Terry the powder coating does go dull after a while. Another thing is not everybody does powder coating correctly, it may look good but can be very brittle. I have a guy just over the fence who I have used a couple of times and his powder coat results are very brittle to the point that when trying to tighten up something against it, a big chunk cracks out from underneath so now I drive two hours to another guy who so far has done good strong work, I can drop the bits without them chipping. According to a street machine article on powder coating they mention that the result should be strong enough to strike it with a hammer without it chipping.

I had a 6x4 trailer load of front end parts for my Cadillac done 4 years ago and it cost me about $500
At least half the price of paint.

I've since been told by a couple of people that powedercoating is pourous and lets in moisture.
The guy that did my Cadillac stuff laid down an undercoat first, hopefully that helps protect it.

Have you noticed how powedercoated outdoor furniature cracks and rusts after a couple of years?
Its cheaper than paint because its not as good.

It dosent look as good as paint anyway, its just cheaper.
