Morning all, I'm busily rebuilding my lemon WB ute that i bought off ebay a few months back. I've fitted a better shell onto the old cars good, non cracked chassis and after much stuffing around, i've been doing a little driving about. Now the ute has a 350 chev, on straight gas, with a turbo 350 gearbox. It goes okay but i'm not keen on that auto box, it seems to dull down the performance of the motor and i'm thinking that maybe i should swap it oput for a 4 or 5 speed manual. I was originally going to do a fairly quick rebuild but i've changed my mind and i'm now doing the rebuild properly. So i have time now to fit a manual if i want. But which to fit? I was tossing around the idea of a Muncie as i'm going to modify get serious about engine mods also to get the best out of the gas, and the Muncie is the strongest chev manual i know, does anyoe have any other suggestions? And what about a 5 speed, what would be a good strong 5 speed box?

I guess the next questions are, what kind of gearbox crossmember should i use, and what size flywheel / clutch? Years ago they used to make a hydraulic clutch conversion for the HQ-WB holdens, are they still around?

If it was me I'd fit a TH400.

But the strongest manual will be a Muncie M22. No others will come close apart from a Super T10. A new wider ratio Muncie from the US will cost you less than $2500 landed. You can even buy one with an overdrive 4th. I'd try to get a slightly wider ratio one for a ute, probably an M20 ratio as they have better reverse gearing and 1st is about the same as an aussie 4spd M21. Have a read here:

For a clutch I'd just use a WB V8 manual pedal and cable and adapter bellhousing from CRS to suit. Personally i'd use an 11" flywheel and clutch so make sure the bellhousing suits.

Crossmember, just use a WB TH350 crossmember. Tailshaft should be the same as TH350 but depending upon the box you may have to use a TH400 yoke and adapter uni. Speedo cable will be a standard HQ 350 manual one. Hurst shifter with modded stick and slight floor hump will suit.

How much work is done to the 350? what about a 5 speed 5.7 commodore box?May need tunnel mods ?
just a thought if its fairly standard....I run a T400.

Thanks for the info gents! I had not thought about the Getrag box, it may not be up to it though. I'm basically planning to put on twin 4 barrel gas carbs, head work, much bigger cam, headers etc. How much abuse can a Getrag take?

How about a Toploader, I've got one behind my 308 with a CRS hydraulic clutch kit.

The Supra W58 box. Handle 450hp no problem. Clean easy neat box with good ratios and excellent internal selectors.

Toploaders are strong, but an M22 Muncie is stronger - they were built for 425+hp engines, and were dropped and replaced with the old and revamped Super T10 once the high output big blocks were done and dusted around 1972. I wouldn't re-invent the wheel, HQ's had M20 GTO Muncies as standard fitment with Hurst shifters, only body mod is a small hump to clear the shifter.

powerglide these were used a lot in the drags but only 2 spd auto.

Heh heh yeah you'd think so. But no i won't be fitting a road ranger! I had always thopught the Toploader was the stronger box, you learn something new every day. I'll stick with the 4 speed Muncie, i may even just save up and get one of those new ones from the US. The fact that i can reuse my TH350 crossmember etc is a big selling point too.

There isn't much wrong with a toploader apart from them being alien to a Holden. By the time you buy an old one and rebuild it properly (standard they are not that good), make up adapter crossmember, tailshaft etc you'll buy a new Muncie which is all new and has all the strengthening mods built in. And it uses standard Holden tailshaft, crossmember and speedo cable (i'm pretty sure the mount is identical to TH350, just double check that first). You should be able to find a bellhousing to suit easily too, rtaher than spending big bucks on a new Toploader to Chev one. I may even have a 308TH to Muncie full cable bellhousing at home somewhere. I bought a complete Muncie conversion out of a VK Commodore many years ago and it is still in the shed somewhere. 308TH and Chev share the same bolt pattern.

Byron, I had a toploader in a 12 sec, car for 2 years and never had any trouble ,they are as tough as.
not to mention the GT's at bathurst.They aren't holden but neither is chev really.

hk you mentioned a super t10,i have one that came out of a torana so has a holden pattern bellhousing, flywheel ,clutch ,shifter,yoke what are they worth as i would like to sell it but have no idea what to ask???

Jim, as I said nothing wrong with toploaders. However as a standard box they are not as tough as one of those new M22 Muncies and need a fair bit of work and new parts to get them right. And they are alien to a HQ-WB.
