Hi guys.
My van has one of those after market air con setups that use half the glove box space. It seems to have the under dash setup, and then two hoses run into the engine bay. Theres nothing else apart from that. I have a complete factory air con system her but I dont think I can be bothered putting it all in. I have 2 compressors too. Do you use them? So I guess what Im wondering is;
1 - what other parts do i need to get it operational?
2 - is it worth getting going? Are they any good?

Some pics

And these are the two hoses running nowhere....

you need a compressor, a condenser (radiator) and the plumbing. the 2 hoses go from the condenser at the front to the unit in the dash, and from the dash unit to the condenser. i am not sure if you need a cylinder with the sight glass, but as you can set it up with the new gas they don't use the sight glass now. as all of these under dash units were designed for R12 gas, which is hard to get now (but still available with propane (which is perfectly safe ) the seals have to be modified for the new R34 gas.

Sorry I missed this post earlier.

That particular a/cond unit is not aftermarket, it is the genuine GM P & A dealer fit unit.

In those days the factory-fitted Frigidaire unit was quite expensive & had to be ordered in advance. If a potential buyer came into a dealership & saw a Kingswood or Premier hat he wanted to buy, but it didn't have factory integrated a/cond, what could the dealer do.

In earlier years the dealer would send it down the road & get an underdash unit fitted, but many customers wanted it integrated. The solution was provided by GM-H in the form of an integrated accessory unit which could be fitted at the dealership & still carry full GM-H warranty.

This unit was one of the first genuine integrated systems. Unfortunately it wasn't one of their best. As you mention you lose more than half your glovebox, but the airflow was cr@p as well. In my opinion, if you want good air conditioning, put that unit in the bin & start over. Either source & fit all the Frigidaire bits or get a modern good quality new underdash a/cond unit.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Thanks John and Dr Terry. Thats a good help. Going by your info Dr Terry I dont think Ill bother fixing this one then. I dont care about air con that much anyway, and I cant really be botherd installing the complete other system. Really; in Ballarat, air con isnt that importamnt!! ha.

Cheers for the info!!

Hi Mate

With all A/C systems fitted with the OLD gas, you can buy fittings to convert them to the new gas R134A. However you will need a qualified person to re-gas it for you and if you have fitted it your self then they may not offer you any warranty. Using old parts can be a hit and a miss, I dont generally like using old parts when I do A/C repairs/service even if my customers want it because an A/C system needs to be clean for it to perform and with second hand parts its hard to tell.

You can buy under dash units which uses the new gas. If you already have hoses routed then try and source a compressor in good condition, under dash unit, condenser, receiver drier and o-rings for connections.

If you require some in depth info, please let me know.
