Finished the alternator and power steering point mounts. Basic cutting of the plates all sorted. Once it all comes apart for paint and plating I will true everything up in the mill and mill some nice nice detail into them. I ended up using a BA Falcon 6cyl belt tensioner simply because it works and I already have it here. All I need to sort now is the water pump front plate which will also serve as a mount for the serpentine belt idler pulley. Next job is to start on the extractors.

Clutch fluid reservoir sorted. I used an aftermarket VT reservoir and modified it. Now the fluid outlet is now also the mount. It will be a short run from the reservoir to the master cylinder with some brake fluid resistant hose.

I also located the collectors for the extractors. There is so much room with a relatively manual box compared to the 4L60 and even Trimatic. I just need to build the extractors now. Hopefully not too many flange joints to enable them to be removed with everything in place

I couldn't be bothered cutting, grinding and welding so I turned to sparks of a different type. I dragged out all the major electrical components that need to be located under the dash. Not a lot in this car so wiring will be relatively straight forward.


Stock switches back in place ready for some basic wiring


Accelerator and cruise control cables run through the firewall


Cruise control module mounted under the dash and cable run through the firewall.


Relay block, fuse block, Dash controller and water pump/fan controller.

A bit more work on the steering column A 3" to 2" steam pipe reducer will form the bottom of the column and allow the lower uni joint to be higher and give better alignment of the intermediate shaft to the rack. At the other end I needed to do a heap of machining to get the steering wheel boss which suits the Commodore steering shaft to clear the EH indicator switch. It will need a transition piece machined and pressed to it so it doesn't look out of place and gives a nice transition from the boss to the column.

I also managed to find a clutch slave cylinder that is correct. Every catalogue lists it as being the same as V6. It is different. The 6cyl version is the black one in the pics and the bleeder valve is almost inaccessible.

Finally got a chance to put some wheels under the wagon body and take some measurements. I now need to work out a finished diff width.

Finished off a few jobs on the wagon today. Made a blanking plate for the front of the CVR water pump. It is now just a water distribution block. The plate also holds the final idler pulley needed for the serpentine belt system. Belt length turned out to be 1817mm which is perfect as there are off the shelf 1800, 1805, 1810, 1815 and 1820mm belts. Also sorted the radiator mounts. I'm not using the stock upper and lower style mounts. A couple of simple 3mm aluminium angle bracket will be welded to the side tanks and mount to the EH radiator support panel. I will get these welded on at the same time I get the hose connections modified to take the AN16 hose fittings.
I'll get back onto the exhaust tomorrow and hopefully have the fronted sorted this weekend.

A bit more today. Passenger side exhaust pipes started. V Band clamps tacked to collectors. Also made up a mount for a Commodore power steering fluid reservoir. I'll use an aftermarket alloy one.

Radiator mounted. Radiator hoses and water pump sorted. Basic fan mockup before making a shroud to mount them. Manifold swapped and throttle body mounted to check accelerator and cruise control cables.

Radiator sorted. Just need to make the final fan mounts and TIG them on. Water pump mounts added. Heaps of clearance with the wheel on full lock. Fuse/relay panel mounted in stock position. All the switches and underdash parts like the pedal box refitted so the basic dash, engine and front end wiring can be done.

I have given up on my guy ever getting the rocker cover adaptor plates designed and cut. Since starting on the project other companies have jumped on the opportunity and already have products in the market place. I have surrendered and purchased a pair of adaptors from PDH Engineering. The price is very good and the finish perfect. Fully CNC manufactured here in Australia.
The problem I have now with my project is that the different shape of the early rocker covers and the extra height added by the adaptor means the rocker cover fouls the booster. I'll have to get creative.

What fans are they? Been looking at a PWR or ADC radiator with their fans and shroud as the FG fan is going to look ugly.

Firstly, love seeing your work, you're very skilled and obviously capable of anything. On that note why did you need someone to make you an adaptor?
I take it was to raise the rocker covers to clear the roller rockers?

I see your modification but is that enough clearance to the booster?

The adaptors allow early non EFI rocker covers to be used on the later EFI heads. It gives the motor an old school look. I will have to move the booster slightly. It's no big deal at this stage as everything is still being mocked up.

The ute runs an eBay special HQ-HZ alloy radiator and two 14" Davies Craig front mounted fans.. The subframes needed a lot of modification to get it to fit. It sits on 180 degrees all day long.

Will a WB V8 radiator work for you. Not saying it would bolt in but the dimensions must be close.

Too wide. I have a few HQ 350 5 row radiators here in good nick still, I'll either use one of those modified on the sides to fit a HK-HG or get a PRW alloy one to suit HK-HG that come with the fully made shroud and fans. Once I dummy up the 283 with the serpentine a/c, steer, alternator and electric water pump I'll see how much space I have.

Sorted out the brake calipers today. Fronts are VT onward HSV upgrade 330mm rotors and upgrade calipers. These ones are CORVETTE versions. Same same. Caliper brackets are off a pair of similar FPV upgrade calipers. These were purchased new years ago and will finally get some use. Rear will be all Ford. Diff is a BA ute variant Borg Warner. A simple bolt on brake upgrade for these diffs is the Territory or BA-BF V8 upgrade rear rotor and caliper. These bolt straight on 328x26mm rear rotors and single piston PBR calipers. These calipers along with the VT booster are the only part in the system that aren't new. Calipers were pulled down, sandblasted, chemically cleaned and checked for wear. They will get painted to match the fronts once I have mocked everything up for the final time.
