I just bought a HQ ute and I haven't put any fuel in it yet. I need to know if any of you guys with a HQ use unleaded fuel and have had problems? If you do, do you use a lead additive along with it? If it won't run well on unleaded, how can I modify the engine so it will run on unleaded fuel? It's just a 202. I think if I use lead additives it will add up to alot of money.. Thanks.
No worries, mate.

If it pinks(thats pre-detination due to lower octane fuel) you will need to use premium for the higher octane. You need an additive like flashlube to lubricate the valves if the head has not been done up with hardened valve seats. The hardened seats stop the valves from wearing back into the head due to the loss of lead from the fuel.

As wbute said. Just to clarify, the lead that was in the old petrol, lubricated the valve seats. These day of no lead, unless you know for sure that the head has been overhauled with hardened valve seats, you will need to run an additive in the fuel for the valve seats. You won't notice any difference by not running it, only your valve seats will wear quicker. Car should run fine on normal unleaded. Fuel additive adds about $2 to the cost of a tank of fuel.
Cheers

Hi Tom,

I bought a 202 HQ ute in June this year. When I asked what additive he was usting, he said, "He said, additve. Whats that?" He did tell me that for the year or so that he had the ute, he was running 95 octane. As a precaution, I have been using the addative from Caltex mixed with the 95 octane. Ute runs great with no pinging. Caltex addative seems to be pretty cheap at around $4 a bottle. Lasts me to fill ups. Hope it helps.

Where are you located?

Yeah, that stuff seems to work great, my dad used to use it in his HQ prem and his EK. Thanks for sharing, I'll go pick some up.

Ah yes, nice place. My grandparents used to live there, around Dapto. Not sure if you would know them at all, Richard and Robyn Higgins (They're almost 70 now!)
No worries, mate.

you will kill a hq motor on 91 unleaded use 95, also there is a product called moreys upper cylinder lubricant it comes with a kit that you fit to inject the stuff as you drive it lasts a long time and you don't have to work out how much to put in.

i stopped using additives after seeing how bad they gunk up the ports. Id rather wait until it needs a freshen up and just do the seats.

Yep, totally agree. Use the higher octane rated ULP & tune motor to suit.

the red motor heads didn't last long when leaded was phased out in 2001.

11 years later, i now assume if they have been registered and running that they are all converted to ULP.
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.
