Hi I have had stored a car for around 6 years and the fuel unleaded) has evaporated leaving a deposit in the tank and fuel lines with a tar like / burnt sugar consistency.
Any suggestion on how to get this cleaned out? The tank will need to come out and be dipped or something.
Is there any additive around that can be used to stop this happening in future apart from draining the system?

Thinners? or carby cleaner? Perhaps talk to some specialist carby guys. They must come across this gunk in carbys.

Not sure if this helps but I recently cleaned a tank that had 2+ year old fuel in it. It had evaporated into white crystals, almost like caked on chalk dust. I pulled the tank out, drained what was left of the old fuel, chucked in various sized nuts and bolts (counted them first so I could make sure I got them all out afterwards) and a litre or 2 of metho. sealed all holes in the tank and gave it a good shake around. Drained the metho. Repeated.

After the first rinse, the muck that came out had the colour of iced coffee. Took 4 rinses and about 10L of metho until the metho came back out clear. Not sure if this will work with your tar like stuff. Maybe if you were able to completely fill the tank with metho and let it soak for a few days?
