Currently upgrading the factory air in my HJ.
What I’ve done so far
Replaced the Harrison compressor with a Sanden unit, modified the condenser to replace the barb clamped hose fittings for the o ring screw coupling type, installed a new receiver dryer.
Used a Speedy Air Spares Harrison to Sanden conversion bracket, easy job and excellent fit, drive belt lines up perfectly.
Next job is to remove the evaporator and send It to Speedy Air Spares for testing, modification or replacement as required.
Has anyone removed the evaporator, blower fan housing, can it be removed with the engine in, are there screws and bolts in the cabin area under the dashboard or is it only the screws that are visible under the bonnet.
Any assistance advice appreciated.

There are screws on both sides. Yes you can remove it with the engine in. No it’s not easy. You pretty much need to pull the dash out to get to the screws. Replace the heater core while your at it and replace the vacuum servos also.

you don't need to dismantle the dash the inside bolts are gettable but awkward, you must make sure you remove them or you wiil break the plastic casing, I think there are two, but stand to be corrected.
lot easier if you remove the inner fender.

Thanks to you both for your replies.
The reason I am removing the evaporator is due to advice from my ac guy who is telling me that the POA valve has to be modified.
Question for wbute, I recall you did the same mod Harrison to Sanden to your WB, did you have to do any other mods or upgrades other than the compressor change, is the WB factory ac system different to the HJ factory ac system?

I'm pretty sure WB commercial is the same setup as HJ-HZ. Maybe a few wiring changes but the refrigerant and vacuum stuff should be near identical apart from maybe the condenser and how it mounts to the radiator support. The red and WB blue V8's are identical in the area that the compressor mounts to the engine from memory.

Just a bit unsure what needs to be done as far as modification, but I think it is related to the POA valve?, if faulty can cause the evaporator to freeze.
I’ll need to clarify with Speedy Air Spares next week. Was just hoping I could get away without taking out the evaporator.
Would you know if replacement aftermarket vacuum servos are available, mine are working ok for now, I have one nos spare which I bought years ago.
As wbute says, practical to replace them if I have to dismantle everything.

Wbute you are correct.
Finally got the evaporator and heater box out.
It involved
1. Removed battery and disconnected all wiring to ac system
2. Removed inner guard and battery tray
3. Removed ac compressor
4. Removed blower motor and disconnected heater hoses
5. Removed bolts and screws from outer casing under bonnet
6. Lowered steering column
7. Removed glovebox, lower dash fascia, dash facia, crash pad headlight switch, radio, fuse panel, removed quad instrument cluster
8. Removed all heater and ac ducting
9. Removed heater box heater core
10. 3 nuts securing evaporator box to firewall removed
Will be replacing heater core, heater hoses and evaporator
I found the source of the dash rattle, was the support strap on the back of the radio, bonus
I have a new crash pad that I purchased some years ago so time to use it as the original has a small crack
Not looking forward to the reassembly.

Does it still have the firewall insulation? Worth getting some if it has gone.

Firewall insulation still intact, although a bit dusty, perfect condition under dashboard, the car has never had any leaks or rust anywhere.
It’s a very nice car Kingswood factory L31original engine for this car, M41, GU4, sports dash, sports wheel, power steer, factory air, mandarin red, black trim.
The insulation on the outside of the evaporator box is long gone, I’ll look at replacing it before it goes back together.
Found a parts supplier Eckler’s Corvette in the US, they stock vacuum servos, will compare them with mine hopefully might find one compatible.

Yeah it’s a big job but at least you know it’s all good when you get it back together.
I replaced all the foam that seals the ducting connections/joins while I had it out too.
I’ve had mine out twice, not counting when I first fitted it. Once when the heater core started leaking and then when a vacuum servo died.

What did u use for the duct seals?
I hoping to be able to get two new vacuum servos before it goes back together
