When we first got the ADR27A in July 1976 and then progressed to NSW passing stricter Laws than the rest of Australia. what was the difference in them Ford and Holden's, you just could not get some combinations in NSW.

I was just reading an old 1983 mag test between the WB Caprice and the new LTD this when you could order EFI 4.1L LTD and then option it up to a 4.9L and then a 5.8L. so in the test this LTD has the 4.9L with 2.92 ration and the Australian standards 2077 states it's fuel economy at city 21.0 L/100 highway 12.5 L/100. but for NSW the AS 2077 has city 19.0 L/100 highway 12.0 L/100
Now in the test the WB Caprice flogs the 4.9L LTD in performance times even tho the Caprice is + 80KG and has a 2.60 diff ratio.
Modern motor 4/1983 got average for test of 18.6 L/100 Caprice and 23.9 L/100 for LTD
Best 15.3 20.3
Worst 20.8 29.2
Something is not right maybe it's NSW ADR tune, they say that the Ford Auto did not respond well, I find that hard to believe being a C4 auto, maybe they put the rubbish FMX auto in it ?

The WB Caprice AS 1077 city 17.0 L/100 and highway 11.0 L/100 NSW or not.

I think that the VH Commodore lost the 3.3L 4sp option in NSW I wonder why that was, no EGR on the 3.3L 4sp or did it need an air pump to pass like the 2.8L had ? the VK 3.3L came with Air pump and past NSW ADR in a 4sp.

Falcon 6cyl XD-E-F have different 6 cyl engine prefix's for NSW from 1/1981 XD and XF 3.3L auto NSW prefix is L and V for the rest of Aus.
XD-E 4.9L NSW is B and rest is P
XD-E 5.8L NSW is H T
XE-F 4.1L NSW is W X

Dr Terry might be your best help here.
In the USA California were always ahead of the curve so to speak. They got AIR on manuals and effectively what we got with I think ADR27A on autos in 1966 (or something to that effect anyway), where the rest of the USA followed in 1968 (the reason we got unique Quadrajet carbs in SBC engines until ADR26 kicked in). Essentially it was a similar thing here with NSW I guess. As I said Dr Terry will probably be able to answer it.

.................

re VH Commodores there was a specific production option in relation to NSW enforced state ADR regs... V7Y

I forget exactly what that entailed (I am at work at present)but NSW did lead the rest of the states with the introduction
of harsher tougher if you like anti-pollution specs for the auto industry (mainly coz Sydney air quality in the 80s was shocking)
Remember that NSW also forced the move to ULP before all others.. inc the Feds

Have more at home, will check tonight

ps.. a WB Caprice would flog a 4.9l LTD ! The 4.9l only had a 2BBL carb as I recall (the 5.8l got a proper carb)

All Ford V8 (4.9 & 5.8) from XC to XE (plus Fairlanes + LTDs) had a 4-barrel Carter Thermoquad.

Yes I remember going to Sydney about 1989 it was like breathing from 3ft away from a exhaust pipe lucky the VL I drove had air-con.

The XC-D-E 4.9L had the carby Dr Terry said but the intake manifold was different to the 5.8L of the same years, the 4.9L secondary part was restricted as to the 5.8L had. so if one is all original you only need open the secondary's to see if it's a 4.9L or 5.8L.

NSW has gone to E10 before all other states I believe, I do not know that unleaded was the case, as I thought that all of Australia went to Unleaded at the same time in 1986.

All cars made from around 2010 on should be running on 95 octane by rights, as that's what they were designed for, only due to PM Jewlier Gillard putting a halt to the regulations that we still persist with 91 octane now, as it was set to be abolished in fact. what happens with such petrol engines from around 2010 on, is that the spark mapping is compromised to deal with the crap 91 octane.

I had a publican telling me that his new VE V6 Commodore at the time, when using E10 really made a difference in performance, he thought it the fuel having ethanol in it was the reason, I said no it's the octane rating in the main as to why he was getting better performance, as the spark timing is not being compromised. what is going on is like as if I had a HQ 202 high compression and if I could not get super fuel and had to run Standard fuel in such back in the days, what would one have to do, well back your dizzy timing off by 12 degrees and you may get by. but you will loose performance and use more fuel. and that is that your cars computer is doing nowadays when you use 91 octane, it's only doing such to save the engine from pining.

My wife's Aurion picks up about 50hp when running on 95 octane or E10 94, such is very impressive.
But now we have E10 91 at some stations and I found E10 maybe a touch better than unleaded 91. and 95 unleaded to E10 94 would be much the same performance but 95 unleaded is best on fuel economy.

All this so called climate change, I just BS ! if Australia was truly serious we would not have 91 octane fuel and if we still did the price would be the same as 95 octane as the only real reason why 95 cost so much more is because they do not use so much of it, but if mandated 95 as the lowest the price of 95 would come down much more than it is.

Just look at the extra fuel Australia is using because of that 91 octane rubbish.
And we should get rid of Unleaded fuel as well as it's very toxic rubbish and only have Unleaded for boats.

We got 10% Metho (denatured Ethaol) fuel in the Hunter region in the later 70’s. Company was called BOGAS. It was also about 94-95 Octane. I had a WB 1-tonner I bought ready to go minus engine and box, and I stuck my old Torana’s 3.3 red engine in it, was about 9.4:1 with Yella Terra head, 30/70 Waggot cam, HEI and extractors but I put a stock HZ inlet and carb on it. It pinged bad on 91 and also a little on 95, but loved the BOGAS 10% especially after a few tanks. I remember pulling the head off years later and it was clean inside, no carbon at all, which I suppose is one big reason why no pinging. It was good fuel though mixed with Ethanol, not the garbage you can get today.
