If i put an aussie four speed in my HX ute instead of the trimatic in there at the moment, will the gearbox crossmember be the same? How about the tailshaft?

And the speedo cable. You may have to change the driven gear though. Decide what type of driving you wish to do though, as with say a 3.08 diff with an M21 you will suddenly find yourself cursing the day you removed the auto when towing, reversing up hill |

How's that Byron? Are the ratios a bit taller in the four speed?

An M21 has a very high 1st gear. They were made as a close ratio 4 speed for racing.
The high first gear combined with a high ratio diff will make it difficult to get the car moving, and keep it moving, slowly as there isn't as much torque multiplicati

Cheers Dave - I know next to nil about these boxes. An M20 would have more street friendly ratios?

Depending on your diff ratio, yes.
Basically, an M20 has a 3.05:1 1st gear. Multiply that by your diff ratio (say, 3.08:1) and you have an effective 1st gear of 9.394:1 which means your motor will turn 9.4 times for every turn of your back wheels (whic

Spud, my original comment about the useability of the auto vs manual is that an auto is always better for reversing, towing, manouvering etc. On the ratios front I agree with Dave, and add that having a 5-speed allows you to use a lower ratio diff as wel |

Hi guys,
Not really sure how relevant this is, since the Torana is a lighter car, but here's my experience...
My g-pak Torana has the 202 with the M20 (high-ish 1st gear, close to 2nd, then a jump to 3rd). Fairly sure it has the 3.08 diff, too. (I

Jason Sounds about right, although using 13" rims over 14" (assuming both have relatively stock tyres) gives you between 10-15% advantage. To make a similar comparasin it would be like changing your diff to a 2.78:1.
Now for arguments sake, imagine re |

Byron,
Well there you go, I had a feeling it'd be vastly different. My other holden (recently acquired) is a HQ ute with 202/3spd, and a 3.55 diff I suspect. (Original Belmont gear - correct me if I'm wrong!) So it's difficult to do direct comparisi

Thanks guys - just looking to get some comments from sensible heads. The 5 speed would be ideal, but it's a budget thing, like most car issues :-(. The trimatic is fine for towing my bikes around with a trailer, it's just too revvy on the highway. A 202 c

If that's all you are worried about...change your diff to a 3.08 or 2.78...even easier! :-))
Cheers...Dave

An aussie 4speed won't fix your top speed revs. Barring minor converter slippage the 4-speed and trimatic both have 1:1 top gears. As Dave says a diff change is the better fix. I think Greg at Classic Oz Wreck has a 2.6:1 commercial diff at the moment. |
