Hi folks I am looking for a set of wheels for the HQ coupe and obviously there are limited wheels available for the HQ pattern. Therefore, I was looking to convert the HQ to Commodore pattern all round. I currently have a 3.89:1 ford 9" drum brake diff. Is there someone that has done this modification that could give me some advice? If I wanted to put disc brakes on the rear what diff would be best suited and what modifications would be required to fit it? What other modifications would be required? Would I need to change the master cylinder/booster arrangement. I believe there is a proportioning valve to adjust the flow front/rear - how would this need to be changed? Thanks mh Edited by user Friday, 13 January 2006 3:35:22 AM(UTC)

Be careful, there are reasons why they changed the stud pattern, its because they also changed the offset, and commodore wheels would not fit on the HQ, as they would hit the tie rod ends, which if you have a look are only millimetres away from the rim, a Edited by user Friday, 13 January 2006 8:10:11 AM(UTC)

Hi there, From the thumbnail you can see i run american racing torq thrust IIs on the HQ. America is still imperial over there so the amount of wheels you can select is nearly endless. Prices are good and the exchange rate is pretty healthy too.

The ford 9" to disc conversion is easy enough. KiwiV8 ran a "how to" including a pattern for the mounts for putting discs on the ford diff in issue 2 (I think it was).

Skydog, keep us all informed on how you go - i for one am keen to hear whats involved!! I would have to agree with the opinion of KiwiV8, you'd end up paying less or the same amount by getting the wheels shipped over! Like he said, the choice is defini

If you can find suitable offset wheels the conversion is fairly simple.
For the front simply buy DBA HQ-WB front discs drilled to 120mm PCD. You may need an adapter to make the mags centre properly on the HQ discs.
For the rear, keep the 9". Pull it |

Thanks for the replies.
I am going to investigate the US import wheels first.
I am still keen to upgrade the 9" rear end to disc. Did the HZ-WB models have disc brake rear end?
Regards

HQ has so many wheels available as it is Chev stud pattern. Almost any wheel you can think of from the USA is available. Maybe more than Commodore pattern. |

What kind of power can the HZ-WB diff handle? Are the HQ coupe/HZ sedan mounts the same on the diff housing or will I have to modify them to fit the HQ coupe.
Thanks

HZ-WB statesman mountings are all the same as HQ coupe plus they have stabilizer mounts welded on if needed, the salisbury diff will take a fair amount of abuse but they are not indestructable.
if it ain't broke we can improve it.
Cheers Steve

The VB group III Commodores sort of demonstrate the limits of these diffs in LSD form. A 300hp 308 break them if you do too much clutch dumping. Open versions will take more abuse. |

Byron et al
I have a 350 chev putting out around 350-400 hp through a turbo 400 with out too much burnout action should the HZ-WB disc rear end hold up OK?
How rare are the LSD versions and what ratios did they come in? can the ratios be changed vis

An auto will (almost) always be kinder to your diff than clutch-dumps in a manual. One thing to remember is that it is ultimately your tyres that wil determine whether your diff can handle the power as sticky tyres will fight the HP with the diff stuck in Edited by user Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:00:13 AM(UTC)

Hi Dave
Thanks for you input. I am keen to put the munro back to standard running gear but it is hard to get away from the unjudicious use of the nedies to light up the back of the munro - especially when lined up near a rice burner. As they say there

What about a BW78 out of a VN/VP or thereabouts Commode? Will look original to an untrained eye/casual glance and are tougher than Salisburys but not as heavy/big and take lots less HP to run than a 9"...
Cheers...Dave

An open Salisbury is stronger than an LSD. In most cases I'm all for trying to find another diff to fit in, but in the HQ-WB case the fact that the VN axles are the right length and same spline as a 9" makes it the best option in my opinion. |
