It's simply an early 308, most likely from a HT Brougham as the 308 was only available in the HT Brougham until 307 stocks were exhausted. Some have turned up in Monaros, Premiers and the like as well. The casting mark was changed to 308 soon after the 30

How sure are you on that? cos the last HP 308 I saw was in a VK and they used it to ID the 308 blocks from the 304 blocks.

Now that's a new "old wives tale". I hear new reasons all the time as to why 179 HP cast and 308 HP cast blocks are special. But the fact is they are just early 308 blocks, ie 1969.
All of the original VK 5litre and VL 5litre blocks i've ever seen have 3

I have a VL 304 block here and it has 308 on bothg sides. The VP 304 also in my shed has 5.0 on it.
I doubt Larry Perkins had much to do with the development of the 308 hp development. He was a very young bloke when working with Harry Firth in the HDT on

I have never heard that one before, to bad they only make one seal. So either HP or 179 will leak, well they leak anyway, HAHAHA.

HP was cast onto 308s for only a month or so, so they are all HT engines with 308H engine numbers, they could then have

Here's one for you. My friend many years ago owned a HT monaro 253 and on the side of the block was stamped 186. Figure that one out!

None of them were stamped. The casting marks ie 138, 161, 173, 2.85, 179, 186, 202, 3.3, 253, 308, 5.0 and HP (I think that's all) were all pronounced casting marks. if it was stamped with 186 anyone could have done it. I'd say it would be impossible for

You're right Byron, wrong use of wording, anyone could stamp anything anywhere. It was cast from the factory. We have had many discussions over the years how it could be done. Maybe someones last day, who knows!

I have seen casting marks modified before. One was simply a VK EFI engine where the owner had machined the engine number pad down and ground off the 3.3 so that is could be passed off as a 149. Also seen a 308 where 308 was ground off and a 253 mould made

HT. But the end of HP and arise of 308 is clouded. I've also seen this in 307 blocks where the casting date and engine stamp date are out of whack by months, so presumedly the same could have happened with 308's. From the information i've been able to gat

As far as I know only HT 308's had HP, and by the time HG was released all 308's had a 308 cast mark. The 308 mark persisted until VK (approx) when 308 appeared on both sides of the block. This changed to 5.0L in VN and once the 5.7 became available (some
