Hi, My mate has a HQ coupe with a 308. The motor was rebuilt about 15 years ago but has only done about 50,000km's (it doesn't get out much). He started it recently and it was very noisy mechanically. he has stripped the oil pump and it appears that the impellors have been chewing into the end plate on the pump. The oil filter has no obvious oil in it which is a worry as well. The impellors seem to have a bit of play on the shaft.
- Has anyone had this sort of problem before?
- Is it likely to be a failure in the pump or where it is driven from inside the engine?

Early HQ's had severe oil pump problems, due in the main to an unauthorised spec change to the pump drive shaft that comes down from the cam. The "tang" at the pump end of the shaft was renowned for breaking off, with a disastrous result.

Thanks Dave. We also noted that the impellor and shaft measurement is longer than specified in the manual (by about 2.5 mm). Can the impellor slide on this shaft over time thus making the whole thing longer or is that unlikely. This oil pump is an afterm

I guess anything is possible. I'm not familiar woth aftermarket pumps, but I presume the impellor will be splined and pressed on to the shaft, which means that the possibility to move is there. If it is assembled as per my guess, you could press the imp

Thanks Guys, My mate has a weird idea that he can rebuild the pump. I reckon it's not worth the effort or the risk to the engine (assuming it's not rooted already). I'll pass on your advice and push him towards a new pump.
Cheers.

That scoring is little bits of steel going through the engine. Dice the pump and fit a standard one. 90% of engines don't need a high pressure pump they only serve to wash out the bearings and cause more problems than they solve. Unless its a full on engi

The high volume pumps only tend to fill rocker covers with oil when it should be down low in engine, the oil is much better around oil pump pick up.

if it ain't broke we can improve it.
