hi all on the weekend i blew out the head caskets on my hz 308 prem wagon and are about to put in a repco replacement it runs on gas/petrol and has about 300000 on the clock so ive been told it is probably better in the long run to replace the whole motor rather than just the redo the heads. The previous owner tells me it is the original motor but the mechanic who is dong the change ovewr says its not. Question ? is there any way of telling from the engine number etc and is it worth keeping the motor, bearing in mind that there is an addional cost. The change over for a stock long motor is $2300.00 plus about a $1000.00 for removal install etc. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Take a look at the casting number above the water pump & see if the block was cast sometime within a few months before the car was complianced. Here's an easy to follow thread with pics: http://www.brockcommodor...tin/showthread.php?t=123
