Hi,
My son has just bought a wb ute with a standard 253 motor. It's fitted with a 600 4 barrel Holley. Fuel consumption is excessive to say the least. Can anyone suggest a better carby for this motor. any help is muchly appreciated. And thanks in advance.

If you want economy go back to the standard WW2 Carby, as for a Holley, (God only knows why people love these things) but no bigger than 500 cfm.

Hi Yarraman,

Never owned a 4 barrel job but sounds seriously overkill. I sure would be thirsty !!!!!! I have 350 Holley on an adapter going to a standard strommie manifold. It seems to work just fine. Around town it can get 19mpg, and 27mpg in highway

Hi
the best carby for this motor is the 4bbl rochester quadrajet which is what it would have had when new,it will meet emission requirments and is very tuneable dont waste time with holleys they are not desighned for economy and dont meet emission laws,t

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions. Seems the Rochester is the way to go. I'll start looking around for one.

ALl VC, VH and WB 4.2's had the right carby. A 308 one will do but you need to modify it for the 253.

I had a holley book for awhile and there is an equation you plug the cars figures into. 390 was on the money from memory.

As mentioned above be careful getting a rochester as i presume most are set up for the 308s.
