Hi guys, I have a 3.08 LSD centre for the EK, but have been recently told that I shouldnt put it in the HR diff housing as the axles will break, the early course spline type are too weak, This raises a couple of questions, 1. are the fine spline axles (Torana) stronger 2. can the centre be modified to suit fine spline 3. is there a better axle or diff housing I should use, I will be towing vans with this car so I dont particularly want to have to carry a couple of spare sets of axles on trips! 4. should I just not use it and revert back to open centre?
Looking for Old Caravans!!!! especially 1950's ply ones! Thanks! |

The coarse spline LSD banjo was standard fitment to HK 307 (although rare in Monaro and Brougham), HT/HG 253 plus others. It should be able to handle a 6cyl in an EK. You can convert it to fine spline using fine spline sun gears, but these were hard to fi |

Thanks Byron, that is why I ask so many "stupid" questions, getting great information like this helps me out a heap! I thought it sounded a little strange that the diff would "snap" axles, especially since the car doent get thrashed. I really apopreciat |

Hi Matt,
I had a 3.36 Banjo LSD in a very hot LJ 6 cyl for years and never had an issue with it at all. Mind you, I didn't do roll-backs or 4 grand clutchdumps either, but other than that I did give it a hard time including many laps around Wanneroo (B

Thanks Dave that is kinda what I figured, I am not into the roll back starts or other such punnishment with this car so I cant see it being too much of a problem, it was just a concern to me when I had been given info that didnt seem right, maybe they wer |

Dave what did you think of the 3:36? was it a daily driver? I imagine it would have been a rocket at launch, and still been fairly comfortable at Highway (legal) speeds? I think it may be better for towing with to get the power off the line than the 3:08 Edited by user Wednesday, 25 January 2006 11:21:10 AM(UTC)

Hi Matt,
I cheated...I had a Cast Iron Celica 5 speed in the LJ...so 5th was within 4% of the revs of 4th with a 3.08 diff (the standard 6 Cyl Torana diff ratio).
The 190 had a 35/75 cam, an 18 pound flywheel (down from the standard 24 pounds!), a Y

Thanks Dave, motor is fairly stockish, 202, it does have a crow cam (for towing). Running through Trimatic, 13inch tyres 180/75/13 (I think will have to check that one but so close to stock it isnt funny) The car will be a daily driver and will need to |

With the auto you could even run a 2.78 banjo. With 13" rims, 202, trimatic and 2.78 were standard fare on an LX Torana, and quite capable of towing. |

G'day Matt,
Personally, I would go for the 3.08 diff centre. I reckon that'll be the best compromise for you.
Cheers...Dave

Thanks for the help guys, the LSD is set up as 3.08, so I will stick that one in, and keep the 3.36 centre as a back up, but will definately get rid of the 3.55, and a couple of 3.89's I have laying around! hehe Thanks again Matt

I would not be too concerned about snapping axles. It is a lot cheaper and less bother to replace an axle than a diff. Years ago I put super strong axles into a short wheelbase Landrover, with the result the diff would break leaving the axles. I ended up
