does anyone know the no. of amps a standard holden alternator puts out? (the car is a hj - hz series with a 308)

also if you are running more electrical equipment such as electric ignition, water pump and twiN thermos would it be better to get an alternator that puts out more amps as you are drawing more power?

any one got any suggestions?

thanks

35A from memory, or 55A for the heavy duty ones.

You can fit an alternator from a VN-VS V8 on there, it has an 85A output (or the special police ones are over 100A).

There are minor wiring changes (needs the addition of another sense wire) but it's

I thought it was pretty expensive also.

I want a higher amp alternator (i guess 55 will do) but I thought the cost of polishing or chroming will cost a lot on top of the cost of the part.

How much does a reconditioned alternator go for?

Cheers

I fitted one to my HJ from a VN V6. Replaced the pulley with the one from the original alternator and it bolted straight up. The bottom adjuster wasn't threaded so I used a nut and bolt. It's been on 3 years now without a problem. Puts out 90 amps

They are a good cheap retro-fit aren't they BluHJ.

VN-VR V6 actually run the same alternator internals as the VN-VS V8.
Only differences are the front half of the casing (mounts vary), the
pulley, and the rear case is rotated around to a different l

For a guide to how big an alternator you need, have a look here: http://www.oldholden.com...php/Maths#Amps_and_Volts

Then you'll know whether a 55 or an 85 or an over 100 amp alternator is needed to feed your car's power habit. :-)
