G'day mate, I've watched the progress of the LC for a while now, awesome car btw but i just had a query. Now that you've had this much success with the 186, looking back do you wish you had worked up a 202 instead? Why or why not? Also, what was your original reasons for opting for a 186 rather then a 202 or other sized motor?

Just a bit of friendly prying :P

Woops I meant to say UC, it's just I've got an LC out back haha. :/

Also how much has the work to the motor cost you all up?

P.S. I drive my car respectibly on the street, built to cruise and sound beefy! When i hit the track, my car drives me....

Here's a photo of the poor old exhaust valve on the 202...

Total spent on the motor has been $4128.75

I can list individual prices for the parts (from memory) if you are chasing 'guides' for a build-up of your own!

keith thats interesting what you've said about the diff between a worked 202 and 179. Did you ever struggle to find parts for the motor and how long did the build take?

The only trouble i had with finding parts was the pushrods, everything else was available over the counter!

It took three months to build the motor, but that was on my weeks off work, i work 2weeks on 1week off... All up if i had been home, it would h

Similar to my situation eh! I think you will appreciate it more if you build it yourself! For everyone's info, this is the first motor i have ever stripped/rebuilt! Its not hard! Just read up on it (haynes manual or workshop manual for the motor your

I want my car to be a street car, maybe a few runs down the strip, i'd be happy to pull 16's consistantly, and do some nice burnouts.

i wouldn't mind a motor thats good to cruise down low then stop it and rev it's tits off.
it gets me to work every da

Well, now it depends on how much you are looking to spend... For a bit more cash than i have spent, you could do up a 202 to rev its nuts off! This is because i would (personally) brace the bottom end to ensure it all stays together! Plus, im not a fan

which would be better to use for a good torquey motor, i know the 202 has decent torque down low. if i go with the 202 i'm going to inject it, worked heads and cam, the rest of the work will just be better pistons, lifters etc.

I onestly doubt i will b

Go the 202 then, a nicely worked 202 has plenty of torque down low! Like i said man, its all about personal preference!! If ya dont mind me askin, do you live near Townsville? I'll give you my old 202 if you want it...

Nah i live in melbourne, i have a 202 at home but i think my dad might be using it in his HT, i'll try to source one from a wrecker, shouldn't be to hard to find.

When you had the 179 bored did you get it balanced and honed etc? should i do this for a

202's are easy to find, i think you'll have no trouble!!

I had my motor balanced, its well worth the extra cash (not much)!!! Normally you only need to hone a motor if you are rebuilding it and not boring it out, if you bore it out, you dont really ne

Hi Keith. It's good to see your UC going so well. I haven't been on here for ages. Like you, I work away a lot. Last 6 mths have been flat.
Haven't had the engine I was building for my brother running yet. Cars still waiting to be painted.
I was reading

Thats cool, input is good! Its just another person's view on the 202 VS 186 debate!! Like i said, im not a fan of stroker's, safely revving a stroker is not as safe as more of a square bore motor!

Thank you for your comments though!! Keep me posted

I went for the 202 rebuild fitted the black EFI head, crank, rods and pistons, and fuel injection, using the original red block off the tonner to preserve the engine numbers.
The black crank is a lot nicer than the red one, smoother and better balanced.
