Hi Guys,

Think Ive spotted the cause of my coolant leaking issue on my 308.

Looks like coolant is coming up around the very front left bolt on the intake Manifold (from front of car). Which sounds very very bad to me..

Ive never pulled this apart, and dont see why coolant should even be near the intake... I can take a photo if needed, could this be a blown head gasket? or does it sound like the water jacket has rusted through...

What is involved in taking the intake manifold off? Its a slow leak, but id like to fix it if its not a huge problem, if it is a symptom of a bigger badder problem, I may just wanna top up the coolant every now and then and look the other way....

Hello wazza,
It looks to me as though the leak is from the water neck, no other place it could be from.

Don't stress, It looks like it's from the thermostat housing. The manifold bolts do reach into the water jackets at each end of the heads so its just a matter of putting some sealant like STAG on the bolt threads

Many inlet manifolds actually have coolant flowing through them and Holden is no different so there's planty of reasons why coolant would be near the inlet manifold.

Many V8 Holdens also require a bit of sealant on the head bolts in order to seal them

Wazza,

Ok - just checked my 253. It could be:

(1) The radiator hose is leaking. This may be a corroded water elbow or the clamp tension. - highly likely corroded elbow

(2) the water elbow seal is leaking - replace and retension - next possible

Hi Wazza
You may find that the inlet manifold is corroded from the water passage across to the bolt hole this is fairly common on holden V8 manifolds especially if the coolant has been neglected.

if it ain't broke we can improve it.

Cheers Steve

Thanks for the response guys!

OK the thermostat has leaked in the past, and still is a bit despite a new gasket (hence marks) but in this instance, the fluid is definitely coming from the bolt.

From the responses, I would say the easiest solution wo

Waaza. You need a new valley cover. The front passage is a water passage and they always corrode out between the water and the bolt holes. You can get them welded up, get a secondhand valley of the right type or buy a new KC 253308 unit.
To remove them i

Thanks Guys, I had a look at some second hand ones on Ebay, and I can see where the water would have corroded through... it all makes sense now, Thanks!

I could get it repaired, but I may just get a new one. Since its a street / daily driver, a Dual Pl

Guys, one more Q...

All the manifolds on Ebay are Torker or Single Plane manifolds. Are these completley inappropriate for a daily driver?

Does anyone know where to get a good dually? anyone one here have a spare to sell? Id be looking around the $3

Wazza,

If it is oozing from the hole the intake manifold has corroded. Yes It can be fixed as stated. At what cost who knows. GOO wont fix it, it will only get worse, and die on u in peak hour !

When u pull the manifold off, its a lot easier to work

Thanks guys, this has been a reall helpful thread.

I could prob weld and grind my existing one, however, if I can upgrade to a better manifold, with EFI holes for the future, then I may as well get a new one now.

Manifolds on Ebay seem reasonable, n

Sounds like intake manifolds eaten out from the water port to the bolt hole. Common problem!!
Unless you know someone that can weld it the machine it back into shape cheaply, then your probably better of getting another manifold.
If you buy a second ha

Dylan,

Read my post above. I have just done it.

I used RED LOCKITE gasket goo 300 degree (BLUE 200 degree is Ok too) on the front and rear valley seals. Nice an thick leave it for at least one hour. Then put the intake manifold on.

I used Hylomar

Hey Guys!

Just to follow up, I've taken the old Manifold off, and it was corroded out like we assumed.

I've got an EdelBrock Manifold (Dual Plane) to put on tomorrow, but was thinking of replacing the bolts while I was at it.

The existing bolts a

ARP do a very suitable manifold bolt set in either chrome or black finish. They are most handy. They are also very much not stock bolts, as the head size is only just (if at all) bigger than the thread size, with tapered shoulders to help with bringing
