hey guys, just put new vz wheels and tyres on my vh, they look grouse. was on a hype after doing this, and thought i would tackle my latest problem, my ring gear. after installing a new starter motor 6 months ago, the ring gear shat itself, and only sometimes would the starter fully engage. so, out came the tailsgaft, gearbox,a clutch, and eventually flywheel. after replacgin both seals on my selector arms on my gear box, i thought it was time i heated up the new ring gear and slide it on. didnt work, couldnt get it hot enough. eventually used a friedns oxy and it was looser than a hooker., to cut a long story short, and reinstalling it all, the same ****en problem occurred. after pulling the starter out numerous times, it has me baffled. brand new ring gear, new starter?? my thoughts now turn to the starter, as i think it isnt returning to its normal position, and therefore the next time, won't start properly. any idea's or tips would help, thanks, as soon as i find how to upload photos to the site, ill post some. andrew

Put a bit of grease on the starter shaft and make sure the gear freely slides fully in and out. Make sure it is not in crooked.

Also, make sure that it isn't too tight against the ring gear when trying to engage. You may need to put some shims or washers between starter and block (or however it is mounted) to move it away from the flywheel.
I had this problem putting high-to |
