Hello Everyone,
I have a 253 Holden motor and was wondering what colour motor it might be like how do you tell them apart. I'm told they came in red, blue and black I was thinking it might have to do with the colour, can someone set me straight.
Thanks Sally.

Only in red & blue, not black.
Red motors ran until the end of VB & HZ production, and had a points dizzy and a 2 barrel stromberg carby.
Blue motors were introduced with the VC & WB in 1979/80, and upgraded to 4 barrel carbs and HEI dizzy.

Sorry - didn't realise you were trying to positively ID them.
The dizzy or carby (with manifold) are one of the first upgrades done on a red 253, so it may not be accurate.
The best way is look at the prefix.
If it has VR or WR and 6 digits, it's |

Mick, there are no W prefix red motors. The most common prefixes you will find on 253's are QR or VR. Sally, check my web site (monaroparts.com) for an engine number prefix listing. It will be further updated tonight with Mick's supplied Commodore 304/308 |

The 253s have the same stroke as the 308 but have a smaller bore diameter.
This means that the pistons are smaller and lighter and the crank counterweights are smaller also.
This is why 253s tend to rev better than 308s.

You only have to be in front at the end of the race. |
