I was wondering how easy it would be to adapt the VN etc computer and ignition setup to another car. What would you need? Where does the timing signal come from? I want to fit electronic ignition but it may be just as easy to fit the Vn system and do away with the distributor altogether. There is no easy way to do electronic to my car as there is no adaptable distributor. (not a Holden). thanks.

The conversion of another vehicle to an AC Delco engine management system isn't difficult, except for the crank position sensor. The VN V6 gets it's fuel and ignition timing off the harmonic balancer. Have a look at one and it's obvious. The V8 ge |

Try looking at the Kalmaker website. They seem to be able to adapt a Delco 808 to run almost any car engine. They should be able to help you with all your questions. Hope this helps.

What car/engine do you want to fit it to. Also you only asked about the ignition side. Do you want to convert to EFI or only electronic ignition.

Its for a 3 cylinder Suzuki. The later model Suzi has electronic ignition but the distributor is driven off the end of the camshaft instead of the side, and the distributor is quite different. Anyway I feel the less moving parts the better so it would b

There is only 3 coils on a VN I think. The sensor is crank position (within one revolution) not crank position within one four stroke cycle. The ECU doesn't know where the engine is within a 4-stroke cycle, only within one revolution so it fires the plugs |

I recall now there are two plug connectors on each coil, I thought there were 6 coils in pairs. The ECU is not going to care whether it fires 2 plugs or one plug. How many sensors does the pulley have? If 3, presumably they would be at 120 deg spacings,

You're right with the coils John, they are simply 3 single coils, with 2 outputs, and fire in a "waste spark" method that Byron described.
You'd simply use 1 coil per cylinder, and insulate the spare terminal.

Hey mate the Vn ignition systems are a direct fire ignition system(DFI). They consist of the ECM Ignition module, Ignition coils and crank shaft position sensor. The crankshaft positon sensor sends signals into the DFI module. Inside the DFI module there

Very interesting. i wonder if I rigged a dummy set of plugs that don't do anything but spark would that help?

Even if you get the electrics to work you still have to fit the Holden harmonic balancer and this could be a bigger problem. The balancer is fairly big and has a Hall effect switch inside it. It may be physically too big to adapt to the little

It will probably be easier to modify a later Suzi distributor, or maybe another make.

I've contemplated the very same thing. I've reverse-engineered the DFI module and have a good idea of how it operates. I must say I haven't looked at the ignition coils - I had assumed the coil had only 1 secondary winding that fired both plugs - I must l

Or if you want to really outrageous, put an extra plug into each cylinder, and turn it into a twin spark engine. Then there is no issues with how to stop the other side of the coil firing.

it would be easier to go an aftermarket ECU and Ignition system. even an MSD coil pack and controller
VN Calais, V8 Auto, Blown etc etc.
Air con, Electrical, Car audio Master.

I went to the wreckers today and got myself a later model DFI module (the one with three separate coils). These are near impossible to modify as they use a thick film hybrid mode of construction whereas the earlier all-in-one coil model used 'normal' comp
