Hi all...Well petrol hit $1.75 a litre today in my part of NZ.
So the chev idea gets put back on the shelf... Can anyone give me
some pointers so far as building a 6cylinder that isnt too bad on
fuel. carb, manifold options (I cant bring myselg to buy a 4cylinder Japa.
I have no preference so far as motors goes.although I know the 186 and 202 better than the 3.3 , cause we didnt really play with them much... Any ideas would be appreciated.

A good injected 304 is pretty economical and has the power. 202 is the same as 3.3. just cubic inches transalted to metrics. 186 is probably a better economy engine and a lot of people think they are a better motor. I don't have any experience with the 18

What vehicle is it for?

I'd be looking at an Ecotec V6 conversion.

In early commodores (similar weights to toranas etc) they achieve 8L/100km crusing the freeway, and mid 12L/100km around town.

They are far more econimical than any carby Holden e

You can get reasonable economy out of a 186. Just put a mild cam (25/65 or thereabouts) in it, get the head cleaned up and converted for PULP, put an XE/XF Falcon Weber or 390/465 Holley on it and a set of extractors/2" exhaust.

With a manual gearbox a

Dear K1W1,

How much do u want to spend on a replacement motor and mods ?

If you go from an old V8 to newish V6 VR-VS you will save in fuel around $1200(NZ) a year. Thats 400kms a week plus 6.00 -> 7.40 km/litre.

A replacement/donor car may cos

The VK 5 speed is OK if you don't give it a hard time....

James (JBM)...I did say for improved drivability meaning around town drivability, particularly if you have a very lumpy cam...

Cheers...Dave

Can you get a 308 diff for a HR? Anyway around town a 308 would have you changing gears all the time resulting in probably worse economy and the pain of forever changing gears.
For a not all that hot 6 the alloy box would be adequate. I have heard the 5
