Does anyone know the secret to removing a bonded windscreen ala VL Commodore?

I don't want to do what a mate of mine did when he wrecked an AU Falcon with a factory sunroof. He wanted to keep the the roof so he removed the front & back screens with a hammer so that he could cut the roof pillars.

There's a couple of ways to do this.
(1) you use a special pull knife that you can pick up from tool stores (bit hard to explain) It has a right angle blade mounted in a billet handle, and aslo has a tee handle attached with a wire rope so you hold the b

Very, Very hard to do without breaking the screen, Jim.

You need a piece of piano wire and a couple of handles (one for each end of the wire).

Drill a hole through the rubber around the screen and feed the piano wire through it. Attach a handle to e

Thanks for the answers. We have a hooked pull knife here at work somewhere but the fellow who knows where it would be is having the day off. I may have to stop at a music store & get some piano wire.

Sometimes you can find the original heating wires (at the top normally) and stick 24Vdc on them. It heats up the seal, making it softer before you try the piano wire trick. Leaving it in the sun in summer works the same. Not sure if VL seals have this set

I've always known VL windscreens in particular to break when being removed.

Whatever you do don't touch the glass with your blad.
I don't think these are glued ala Hq, they are just got rubber seals. I would use a staedler knife with a new bladfe and carefully cut the rubber away as much as possible. Keep the blade wet it cuts

A few mates and I removed the windscreen from my HJ the other night with a few sharp knifes to split the rubber, and then got a hacksaw blade on a grip handle and worked that around the top and sides, using the non serated edge of the hacksaw blade. It wo

Likely that was a toughened glass screen they are relatively easy to remove the laminated ones which the later cars like the Commodores have seem to be thinner and VERY easy to crack if you put the least amount of stress on them or go near them with a met

Thanks all,
I have decided to leave it in there. The other problem that a Commodore has over a HQ-WB is that the Kingswood screen is held in by a tar based glue that never fully sets. This glue can be softened with heat or a solvent.

Well to apply some materials knowledge.

Sounds like what used in the Kingswood screen is a Thermoplastic, a type of plastic which can be heated and moulded then heated and remoulded. On the other hand the Commodore might contain a Thermoset, which afte

I changed my mind & decided to have a go at it. I spent about 2 or 3 hours cutting the urethane with one of those Stanley knives that you snap the end of the blade off when it gets blunt.

Got it out in one piece.
