I am currently doing up a hj ute and am planning on fitting an Rb30 from a vl commodore. Just wanted to know if anyone has done a similar conversion and any tips would be great. I am going to get the kit from Castlemaine Rod Shop but wanted to know if there were any unforseen problems i may come across. Cheers.

Personally I'd use the engine from the skyline, same engine but slightly different head flow from what I've been told. But i can confirm that the nissan version is faster than the Holden version. A couple of my mates own VL's both auto and manual, and I o

The boys at Jaffa Motors in Bayswater North have a work ute with a Commodore V6 conversion that looks like it was factory fitted.

Great job, but as that's their thing, you'd expect nothing less.

I heard the Skyline motor was the go too and Jas1964EH

Sounds like a good project, but I would have chosen a VN 5.0L. Easier, cheaper all up and you get a decent gearbox to boot instead of an old Datsun box. But as always we can't like the same thing. I remember when you could still buy a wrecked VL with good

Hi Guys.

The N/A RB30-E motor in the VL has exactly the same specs as the R31 Skyline version. The only difference is the sump shape & the HOLDEN badge cast on the rocker cover.

The reason the Skyline has slightly better performance (around town) is

I personally agree with Byron.

Why go to all the grief of needing to engineer a motor when an injected V8 requires no engineering ?

I've been down the engineering road for just a red 6 into an EK and it's something I wouldn't wate my time and money

Cheers Dr.Terry,
Is there anything in the rumour that Skyline motors didn't suffer "heat soak" as bad as VL ones due to the way the radiator was set up ?

Thanks for the info. I already have a wrecked VL with low kays that i got for $200. The reason for using this motor is to do something a bit different, you see a lot of injected 5L conversions but not many RB30s.

The water flow in the head of the skyline is what i was led to believe, apparantlly Holden's changed it for what ever reason, and this is the cause of the VL's hot spots in the head.. Weather it's true or not i'm not sure. But i believe the head problem i

before you shell out ~$450 on an exchange rear drop sump go & talk to a 4WD wrecker or a jap importer. Some Nissan Patrol's had the RB30 with a rear drop sump which may just fit the HJ.

I think that VL head cracking issue was due to the Holden havin

Hi Guys.

Yes, Jim is on the money with the radiator thing.

The VL radiator had 2 problems. Firstly it was lower than the Skyline radiator, which meant if the cooling system wasn't bled properly (common) then you had overheating issues. Secondly whil

Hi Jim,

I have been trying to find an RB powered GQ Patrol sump for a while now for the Qute. They, apparently, need a little bit of panelbeating to make then clear everything in the HQ - WB's. Unfortunately, the RB powered GQ's were not that common (i

Would a TB42 sump fit on the RB30? Doesn't TB stand for tall block & RB stand for runty block? 8-)

Following this with interest - been offered an RB30 for next to nought and am seriously considering dropping it in a HX ute. It's got a four speed auto attached - how strong is that box?

Hi Spud, AFAIK, the box will handle anything the RB will put out and is the transmission I am going to use.

I got your E-mail and will reply tonight. Sorry, I ran out of time last night...

I was under the impression that the non-turbo VL auto is an old Datsun 1600 Jatco box in disguise, and a known weak box. The turbo version is supposed to be stronger. I might be wrong, but I did hear this somewhere.
