The old carbied 308 is getting a bit smoky so after looking at the short term options (as I intend to put a 454 in it eventually) I started looking at injected 5.0 litre engines. They are getting quite cheap now given the cost of fuel, and I toyed with just getting a complete one and sticking a redline manifold on it. But today I just bought a complete conversion out of a VP SS with 149,000kM on it. Everything from fan to fuel tank, including alternator, starter, harness, ECU etc. for under $1,000 - cheaper than rebuilding a tired old red motor.

The fuel tank and pump I got is from a VN SS. What I'm going to do is fit the complete VN V8 fuel tank and pump setup on the tonner where the HZ fuel tank is now - it runs on LPG so it's a snack to muck around and get it all ready whilst still driving it every day. Once the fuel is done i'll then get the harness and wiring all in. Next is move the battery to the driver's side with temporary leads and mount the air box. Finally then do the motor swap, using the VN engine pipes and cat so that it can be tilt-trayed to the exhaust shop, where the exhaust shall be modified to move the muffler over under the new VN fuel tank so that I can migrate the gas tank over to the passenger's side and get the spare back under the tray.

What I intend to do is photograph and document it all along the way and stick it on my website so that the reference is there for everyone to follow. Good idea?? Will it help anyone for me to do this?

Almost forgot - I didn't get the original 1992 VP Memcal with it. I got a VN ASBX (auto) and a VN AFUA (man). It's going to have a TH400 behind it - which is best to use? Ideally I want a BAAP (165kW) or a BBMP (185kW) for the 1992 VP engine. Anyone have one of these spare?

Sounds like a great idea Byron.I hope to do the same conversion in the near future, (once i can get my hands on a clean cheap one tonna)
I only recently relocated down to adelaide from brisbane so i still haven't got around to finding a decent wreckers.

If a man say's something in the woods and there is no women around, is he still wrong?

Hope it goes well Byron, would be great to have all the info but can you give some wiring diagrams etc.
Fitting the motor and gear box is covered but a detailed wiring setup is not. Being a sparky I have sorted my own spec's out but giving a detailed ste

I've looked at the wiring already, and it looks very easy. All of the VP wiring is attached to the motor, so all it appears to need is a couple of fuses and relays over on the drivers side and a 12V feed to the harness next to the ECU, plus a small amount

Commy:
Full: 35-40 ohms
1/2: around 100 ohms
Empty: around 290 ohms
Unfortunately, the HZ has a different resistance value BUT works in the same direction.
Full - 10 ohms
Half - 22 ohms
Empty - 75?? ohms.
So maybe just adding a resister setup to t

The ECU needs the speed sensor unfortunately. Dr Terry tells me it's worth making a box that converts pulses the same as the dash so that I can run the factory cruise control as well as send the pulses to the ECU.

Hi
This is for Byron.
You said previously that you need to have a pulse from your T400 that is adaptable to except at your HZ gauge.
I just brought a transjuicer and cable set up for my T700, GTS dash from Castlemaine Rod Shop - Just had to scew it int

No, I need a 2-pulse per rev speed sensor to drive the VP ECM. What happens in a VN/VP is the factory speed sensor is a 10 pole magnet and hall effect switch, that gives 10 pulses per rev. The speedo uses this. In the speedo (or trip computer for those mo

Hi Again Byron

Are running A/c in your ute? If so are you leaving it in the original spot on the passenger side?

If so, food for thought, the HZ A/c brackets will interfer with your throttle body - I have just gone through the task of modifying my b

No air at this stage. If I do it will be a later model compressor, not the old clunker. I'll make some brackets to suit if and when.

Also got air con compressors to suit VK to VS the VS one is quite small. About the size of an Astra one (which I also have !) No brackets tho. I bought a heap of compressors at a wreckers closing down auction.

Checked em. Only got 6 cylinder to suit VN, VP, VS. The VS is for LPG but I suppose could be re tuned.
It is P/no BTBS16233250.
The VP and VN are totally different in appearance, the VN is a lot smaller.
Can't make out the part numbers. The vn has 920

Hi johnperth.

VN/VP/VG/VQ all use the same ECU, service number 1227808. The 16183082 unit the Byron asked about suits manual trans VR V6 & V8 & VS V8 only & it looks the same as the VN unit, with the smaller case. The auto trans VR V6 & V8 & VS V8 use
