Just wondering if the 253 and the 308 block are the same size on the outside like do they use the same mounts and are the mount points the same. What I'm getting at is are both engines the same in mass, heads the same distance apart, block length the same, height the same.

Fred, just be careful of one thing though. Late 1974 to mid 1982 (or thereabouts but excluding Torana) auto and all post 1988 VN 308 blocks have a different gearbox pattern to 99.99% of 253 blocks. Basically what I'm trying to tell you is when you choose |

The 253 and the 308 block are not the same. I myself currently rebuilding a 253, have noticed that though the mains is the same, the cylinders are much different. The 308's cylinder is much wider in diameter therefore making the pistons different but the

Wider diamete cylinders account for the difference in internal engine size. ;) Hence 253 has smaller diameter.

More on that thought- The 253 & the 308 have the same stroke, right? Is it possible to bore a 253 anywhere near 308? Does anyone know how far you can go with a 253?

i think the 253 and 308 share the same casting like the 186 202's ect just diffrent embossing so i do beleave that you could take a 253 to 308 without hassle

i think you would need to change the crank aswell. Just like late efi engines have a 304 crank and not 308 so id assume 253s would use a different crank

Hi Guys.
This query pops up so often we need a 'sticky' or something for it.
Basically the 253 & 308 (& 304) are externally the same size & mounting etc. All ancilliaries mount in the same spots using the same holes. The casting moulds for both are |

I believe that 253 and 308 blocks have differtent water galleri4es for the cooling system. So, you can't bore out a 253 block to accept 308 pistons. 253 and 308 share the same stroke, but have different bore sizes.

There is what I always refer to as five basic generations of the 253/308 blocks. The main difference that makes parts swapping a little harder occurs between the first and second generations when the rear main seal changed from neoprene to rope. These cra |
