hi fellas this might be a little off topic as the car im fixing is a 1995 hyundai excel ive recived help on this forum to fix me mums VL before and since i couldnt find the right web site/forum to ask i thought i'd ask here well the excel stripped the timing belt i pulled the head off today to find the smaller valves have hit the piston slightly so im changing the head but by question is about the cam shaft timing pully someone has marked the wheel with a white marker on the wheel and the little notch in the wheel doesnt even work either so im wondering if i go by the lobes on the cam shaft i should be right now when i looked at the head and a lined the lobes for cylinder #1 both facing in a "V" shape facing up but when i alined the dot on the wheel the dot is pointing south and the timing notch is pointing towards the rear of the car when i time it as the haynes repair book both of the timing lobes are facing down when the piston is at TDC so should i just set the #1 piston at TDC and time the cam shaft so the #1 lobes are facing a "V"? The usual thing to do is set # 1 piston on TDC on its compression stroke and have the valves on the opposite cylinder "rocking".
Start by turning the crank until # 1 piston is at the top of the cylinder and the distributor rotor is pointing

You may not need to replace the head, most likely there are only a couple of bent valves, get new ones and have all the valves/seats done. You would probably have to do this on the replacement head anyway.

I believe these were a derivative of the Mitsubishi motor so if you can't find a Hyundai manual the Mitsubishi one might help.

BrianH, that sounds complicated mate :( heres the thing in the haynes repair book it says to turn the cam shaft pully untill the timing is set with the marking on the head when i do this the valves for #1 cylinder are closed but im thinking its about to o

When # 1 piston is on TDC on the compression stroke, both valves are supposed to be closed. As the engine keeps turning the first one to open will be the exhaust but that will not be until the piston is almost at the bottom of its stroke.

now i get what ur saying setting the crank at TDC is easy the timing marks are correct for this but getting the cam timming is a little bit tricky so what i might do is make sure all #1 valves are closed and #1 piston is at TDC now if the valves are openi Edited by user Tuesday, 8 August 2006 10:14:18 AM(UTC)

It is hard for me to say much more Gazza without knowing exactly how your ignition works. If it anything like a V6 Holden it will fire the plug on both the compression and exhaust strokes. You get a weak spark on the exhaust stroke and a good one on com

i went to pick up a head from the wreckers today instead of getting the head he gave me a complete motor but since i already have my original motor apart im just going to swap the head over i found out theres a sensor that senses the position of the cam s

360? um 180. To tell if its on compression stroke turn the motor by hand and hold your finger over the spark plug on compression you will feel the air being pushed out. Most likely there is a mark on the flywheel as well that might help.

ok guys i got the motor back together today cranked it over fired up strait away runs normal revs normal but i have a loud fast ticking noise the timing is spot on i will check the rockers tomorrow there not adjustable but i will make sure they are done u
