Hi,

My folks have a VT Commodore. The little black buttons on the remote/key have worn and come off, as well as the little white block that fits underneath.

Holden are telling us that we need to have the key replaced - they reuse the silver metal part, and replace the rest of the key. Quite expensive when all we want to do is replace the button pads.

Can the black rubber pad/buttons be purchased separately?

Cheers,
Jason.

No they can't, and the keys are glued together and not serviceable (although some DIY people pop them open to replace the battery).

Wait until MrMinit have a sale & you'll get it heaps cheaper than Holden.

Thanks Mick.

That's a bummer, but I'm hardly surprised.

Is there any truth that you can buy your own remote, switch the metal key part over, and program it at home? Found a commodore forum where people reckon they have, with various combinations of

If you buy a key from Holden, you have to have them program it, which costs them nest to nothing as they have all the necessary coding related to VIN numbers on their computer system. Once you get a key off them it works straight away, without you having

Hi Jason.

Just to add to what Mick has said. The key head itself costs around $40 to $50, depending on the number of buttons & the equipment to do the job costs many $1000s. We charge around $80 supplied, fitted & coded, which is cheap when compared to

Thanks again, guys.

Dad's just visiting Brisbane at the moment, without the car, but with the key. Our local Brisbane Holden mob here quotes $110 for the whole job, requiring the car, which we thought was a tad expensive.

However, the more we read

Go to mist minite and get them there then programme instructions are given, takes 2 minutes.

Did it for the VS, and will do again for the VT.

Mick,

Do you know if original Holden keyheads (VS/VT) can be re-programmed? You mentioned the Mr Minit ones are a burn-once only keyhead. Obviously Holden would want $40-$50 to re-program one if its possible but still half the price if you already have

Hi Guys.

No, Rhys the VR onwards keyheads are a burn once item. AFAIK Mr Minit uses the factory keyhead, its just that their Silca machine can copy an old one & program a new one with needing the car.

Hi Rhys.

Well not totally useless. If we go back to Jason's original post, you could use 2nd hand keyheads as a supply of good rubber buttons. If you had the patience to pry one apart you can actually replace the battery (as Mick has said) & also repla

Recently bought a key head on ebay to suit a VT Clubsport for $35.
Took it with the car to Motors in Launceston, and they programmed it for $30. All up cost $75.
