Hey guys i have a problem with my 1996 vs commodore when ever im at idle or in traffic the engine seems to be heating up and the fan doesnt kick in until the the car is almost at boiling point i had an idea to fit a switch straigh from the thermo fan to somwher in the car just wondering what you guys think also if u guys have any ideas i would be glad to hear them.

I've done that on my older holdens. A three way switch (ON-OFF-ON) that controls whether the thermo is controlled by the air-con, or by a direct 12v feed (from the accessory position). If I'm in traffic and want a fan boost, I can turn the thermo on man

there is a previous post that recomends hooking up a relay to run an override on the thermo fan when the brake light is on.
aparantly this is a davies craig recommendation.
It makes a lot of sence to me. There would probably bo more sofisticated ways of

thanks for your input guys. yeah i have just recently flushed the radiator i checked all the hoses there seems to be no blockadge also found a small oil leak from the sump wich i dought it woud have much affect has plenty of oil so it also may be the ther

it a standard v6 3.8 no mods whatso ever. I thought it might just be the heat sensor so thats getting replace with a new one also looking into getting twin thermo fans so hopefully that will solve the problem

Have you tried bleeding the cooling system, with the brass screw??

G,day, i had the same problem on our vn v6.It finished up being the thermo fan sensor.I bought a new one from holden($16.00)and it fixed the problem.My fan comes on at the second notch on the temp guage now,instead of at 3/4.

remove engine cover (4x 10mm nuts) you should see a brass screw on thermostat housing. Cut bottom off 1.25 litre coke bottle, place bottle neck inside radiator, you may need to put some tape around bottle to hold it in rad neck. fill coke bottle with wate

G,day, have you thought it might be the crank angle senser, try that as when i had trouble like that with the vp.. when i got to the servo i poored water over it and the car started straight away.
