Hey all, im looking at swapping my project car(LH Torana) for a LS1 motor and 6 speed or auto (depends on deal) Plan is to fit this into my LX SS hatch. Can you buy off the shelf engine mounts and whatever else i need? I know one issue will be the speedo. Any help will be much appreciated, building cars are my thing but motor/box work i know nothing:) Cheers

Hard work. Although word is that there is an aftermarket need for rear hump LS1 sumps in the US and this is what you need. All said you are infintely better off buying an earlier 304/350 Holden V8 which is basically a bolt in conversion. A VT 5.7 engine goes just as hard as a stock LS1 - and you can run a TH350 behind it if you want to keep it really simple. |

looking thru the parts peddler magazine and there was a place in Castle Maine that was advertising the conversion kit for popular cars. LH-LX, HQ-WB and so on. the conversion come with sump,engine mounts and wiring loom for the LS1. My Mate just picked up

LH-LX, HQ-WB and so on. the conversion come with sump,engine mounts and wiring loom for the LS1. My Mate just picked up the conversion for his HJ. Living around a few LS1 nuts they took there cars to a guy to tune their LS1s. VT SS is 215kws a VX SS is 225kws at the flywheel. After a good exhaust and SS induction throttle body and a MAFless tune. they all have more power than a standard VZ SS. Its in a Commodore.my mate has MAFless tune. SS induction T/Body. 2 1/2 twin system. A baby cam,small enough so he didnt need a stally.3.46 diff ratio. its in an Auto, the end result was 238kw at the tyres and 12.8 at Eastern Creek. little playing on the street and normal driving it returns 12L/100Kms. After buying the car. A few bits off his mates. the mods owe him about $3500. Not bad from 225kw at the flywheel to 238 at the tyres.on LS1 web site i have seen a LS1 and 6sp box go for 5K. LS1 bolt pattern is the same as the T350/400/700.

This place has an LS1 with a carby setup. Could make things a fair bit easier. Still good for 300kw @ the fly. Pretty expensive tho. http://www.suburbanimports.com.au/motors.htm

Yes the LS1 can be done, and as a car an originally LS1 powered unit is probably a better option. Point is though that a Holden engine is a LOT cheaper and easier to install in an LX. Investment over and above the engine conversion is minimal. If you use |

If you use a red block and the LX is pre ADR27A you dont even need an Engineers report, although a stroker (5.7) will by the letter of the law. |

I have just put an LS1 into an LX and the biggest issue for me was the sump. No one that I could find made aftermarket sumps to fit the one piece rear main seal LS1 into a tory, I had to have mine chopped and welded and there was still an issue as the LS1 has some kind of oil baffle or what ever you call it to stop oil flying around so much that suspended horizontaly below the bottom end which would not fit inside the new sump as it had to be so shallow to fit in above the steering. The damn thing was suspended by extended bearing bolts which needed to be removed and cut down. With a bit of hind sight I would consider mounting the engine slighly higher than mine is currently cause I will never be able to get at that oil pan without removing the whole engine! Other issues that i had with the install (you might run into the same probs?) the big starter that comes with the new things probrably wont fit inside the tight little extractors you will have to have made and if you are getting extractors made up, make sure that you arnt left in the same situation as me where you need to remove them from the side of the engine to get at one of the spark plugs on each side! (the turn down is so sharp that I also melt plug covers!) Carefull how deep then engine is mounted back into the tunnel, i wanted mine deep to fit a big vn shroud and thermal setup at the front, and since my ls1 and most of the ones in the import / crate shops come with the huge cake size HEI dizzys on them the dizzy was to big and hit the firewall.(i ended up having to get a little mallory 6 volt, it was the smallest thing I could find, about the size of a coke can!)
At times I wish that I had stuck with a 308 but I am very happy with the result. BE WARY of anyone who tells you that it will just bolt in. I heard that allot from the crate importers. Nothing fits in a Torana, anyone who has put something other than a 253/308 in (themselves) will have a story for you about how much of a bastard it was.
