hey guys. just wondering how the rear axles on an lj are meant to come out? i've undone the 4 bolts behind the axle flange that go through the backing plate but not sure what else i need to do. it won't budge at the moment. this is my first attempt at rear axles so forgive for what might seem a dumb question. cheers.

put the brake drum on backwards and use it as a slide hammer

Hi Dave, They CAN be a bugger to get out, especially if you have never done them before.
You do have the car well supported on axle stands, don't you? Also a good idea to lay the wheels under the car, so if she does happen to fall off the stands, at le

Further to Qute I find it also helps to wind the axle retaining bolts on so they are level with the ends also this way when it lets go you dont end up putting your arse through the garage wall. you tend to start giving it a bit if its stubbort and they al |

thanks fellas. turning the brake drum around worked well. they weren't that hard after all! i've got the diff out and all the control arms etc off. i'm replacing all the bushes and probably the centre as well. the reason for doing all this was to fix the

Universal Joints. Had a Charger that used to clunk really badly with short sharp accelerate or backoff. Would have sworn it was backlash in the gearbox. I was told to replace uni joints even though I could not feel any excessive play in tailshaft and it

Hi Cam,
Agreed. Do your uni's while she's out.
Replace your axle bearings while there...they are out and not that expensive and it saves any worry that you'll be overtaken by one of your rear wheels with the axle attached....

thanks guys. i'll go over everything. like you said it saves any worry. the clunk i'm not sure of then because the uni's were the first thing i replaced about a month ago. maybe it is a gearbox problem but it just doesn't seem to be coming from there. i'l
