Hi boys, i just laid my hands on a great 253 which i bought off ebay.
This 253 is currently under rebuild, after which i plan to sell it.
The Engine runs flat top pistons, a 350 Holley and is complete with alternator, Dizzy, and other parts.
during the rebuild the heads will be shaved and the rest of the engine machined.
My question is, once this rebuild is complete, how much should the engine sell for?

Just about every VB-VH 253 that comes into the local Commodore wreckers gets stripped for accessories and goes in the scrap bin. I think they struggle to sell a blue 253 complete for $495.

Whoever CH1 is I agree. You wont make back the price of the rebuild - even if the motor was free. I also had a GREAT 253 in my wife's tonner - Keep it & enjoy it yourself- cheapest horsepower you'll ever buy. They may be the poor cousin to the 308, but he

Where you from 'Itsmint'? I'm chasing a good 253 bottom end. I'm in Narangba, Qld (near Caboolture).

The engine is in pieces at the moment, and i have realised that the heads are in great conditionand dont need to be shaved, the carb is actually a 390 holley, and everything works. it turns over great, and everything is smooth.

Hmmmmm. Maybe it was me :-)

OK it was me.

The ol' 253 is a sweet motor. Had a 253 4sp VH Commie and it purred real nice. Used as much oil as petrol, but I liked it.

That is a sweet car! i think street machine made a mistake, the rocker cover in the picture, and the specs in the mag said two different motors which one was it?

The 253 is a red motor, from a HJ ute.

The sticker on the rocker cover is 179, the block is 186, and the head is 202.

Being a pre pollution block, there was no EGR or vapour cannister requirements.

does it pull hard?
in my opinion, the 186 was the best holden six. the 202 drank too much juice

Compared to what? An stock 179? A stock 186? A stock 202?

This motor drinks a lot more petrol than a 202, but you have consider the weight.

In my opinion 186's are overated as being the best. They just don't have as much grunt as a 202.

You often hear the saying. "186's rev harder than a 202" Thing is revs are reciprocating metal. Cubes are volume. volume = power and stroke = torque. My brother in-laws rotary has some pretty serious revs available if that is what I need at the time. :)
