Hi Kimbo.

Scan tool prices start at around $4,000 for the most basic one, its a bit unnecessary for home use. The fact that the auto elect is getting data faults indicate that your reconditioned ABS unit may be faulty in some way. It will have a warranty, get him to fit another one. Most ABS module problems usually affect other parts of the car e.g. trans or EFI.

I use the Injectronics branded unit, they are best, with the best warranty (2 years). Regardless of what brand your auto elect has fitted, it would still have some warranty, even if its only 3 months you are still covered.

Is this another fault tied in with the ABS module,as I think it is a speed sensitive steering rack ??
If so can you send me a price to me at [email protected] ??

cheers

If you live in NSW & you purchased the car from a licensed motor dealer, they have to fix it at no charge to you.

If the car is up to 10 years old & has done less than 160,000 km then it has a full 3 months warranty. If is outside those numbers it will still be covered under the trade practices act as being unsuitable for retail sale. Also, if it is outside those numbers the dealer must, by law, provide you with a safety inspection certificate (pink slip). It cant pass a pink slip in that condition, so you can report the inspector who passed the car to the RTA. The dealer wont like that, he will have to fix it.

If the dealer tries to bluff you or refuses to fix your problem, ring the Dept of Fair Trading.

hi Dr Terry you seeem to be the man to ask..... I have a commodore VT 1999 series...the ABS is faulty..I have got another spare, but the connections dont seem to be the same there are two pipe connections at the top of mine and the replacement has only one...does this whole section need to be replaced or can the black front attatchment be taken off and connected to the alloy housing? and if I disconnect the ABS module in whole will the system need to be rebooted?

Firstly, the units should at least look the same. If there are a different number of hydraulic fittings then they are likely to be different units. One will have traction control & the other one will not have.

This means that the black module (the bit you are swapping) will not be interchangeable. It will have a different part number & will be physically different & most likely not even bolt up.

Hi all i have a problem if anyone can help with a 1999 vt commodore sedan olympic edition it has been overheating for close to 8 months about 3 months ago the side tank on the radiator burst so we replaced the radiator, hoses, clamps, thermostat, thermostat housing, gasket, water pump as it was so far gone it wasnt funny,we then flushed and bled the system, and also a new temp sensor was fitted yet the temp gauge still rises to 3/4 the the alarm bells ring and flashes hot hot hot it stays this way for about 30 seconds then 2-5 minutes later it does the same thing but you cant hear it boiling or steaming also i am having a hesitation problem i put a bottle of spitfire in the tank but hasnt fixed the hesitation it is worse on the m5 especially entrance ramp it feels as though it may stall and take off at lights the hesitation is bad its just got really bad power loss but every now and again it runs great hope someone can help thx

wow VT's hey they sound like a lot of fun, I bought my daughter one, ex-cop car and touch wood no major problems. But having said that the ABS light does come on every now and then and a simple turn off and back on fixes the problem, no traction control, but I was told that the police "modify" the ABS on their cars, fact or fiction ??? Also the only other problem I have faced is the fact that I put a statesman interior in it and it set the air bag warning light off so I changed the belt buckles on the seats which seem to stop it for a while but now it comes on when you start it up ??? Apart from that seems to be a sound car ;-)

From the sound of it, you may just have a gauge issue. Check the actual temperature of the motor thru the full range & compare that to the gauge reading.

VTs are pretty bullet-proof, get someone familiar with them, it's not that difficult.

Don't bother with "spitfire in the tank" it's a waste of money. A hesitation will be caused by either fuel pressure or blocked injectors (get them properly cleaned), or it may be ignition related (plugs, leads or coils). Once again not much to go wrong.
