Hey I have a XC Falcon 351 cleveland & it just recently started pinging BADLY anything after 2500 with sudden accelaration, I have checked timing, base timing is 12 deg BTDC Total advance is about 36 deg BTDC, it has always ran good with that ignition timing setup. I tried retarding it still pings! I'm running 98 octance fuel, I have also checked for bent push rods & their all fine too. I thought it was a dizzy problem so I got a brand new crane dizzy with a Hi-6 & LX 92 coil & still is doing the same thing. Tried changing carbies as I thought it might be leaning out through out the RPM! Any ideas guys cause I have run out! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Maybe the harmonic balancer has slipped. Check that on No 1 TDC that the timing marks on the pulley line up.

How many km's are on the motor? If its getting up there being a clevo I would eyeball the timming chain then go for a colder plug.

Lucky if it has 20000 since re-build which was about 4 years ago & I did put a new roller master double row timing chain set in it. I have BP5FS NGK plugs at the moment & I'm getting BP6FS plugs on Friday that's the coldest plug I could get hold of.

It's about 10:1 compression ratio but I have never had a problem untill now! I just tried colder plugs, a tank of that new optmax extreme (100 octane) & an octane boost so that's atleast 107 octane! She still pings 3000rpm up & you have to drive it like a

Hi Sly,
Firstly, put a timing light on her and have a look at what the timing is doing at 3 grand. You should have about 36 degrees of total ignition advance and, certainly, no more than 40.
Another problem can be a build-up of carbon in the combust

Had a look at the timing today base & advance, seems to be spot on if anything slightly retarded, 12 deg base & max advance at about 4000 rpm is 34 with the slowest curve. Tried the water in a pressure pack pumped close to a litre in it over about an hour

Are you sure that guage is reading correctly? About 15 - 20 psi at idle and 30 - 40 at higher revs are more normal oil pressure readings.
Cheers...Dave

hmmm I'm pretty sure it's reading correctly. Do you know the factory specs that these things run?

I'd think you'd be blowing seals left, right and centre at 70 PSI...
Just a thought...how's your timing chain?
Cheers...Dave

What it looks like to me is your trying to dial too much timing into it. Is the cam solid or hydraulic. If it's a hyd camshaft you need no more than 30-32 deg max. I used to run 12 inital 36 total on my solid cammed 351 with 10.5:1 compression. That's all |

Hey boys thanks for all your posts I have found my problem, what sounded like a bad ping has turned out to be much worse! I pulled my rocker gear apart & cam etc, I found one roller rocker worn like the pushrod was moving away from the seat & wore the rol

Bugger...not what you wanted to find, but at least you found the problem and can now fix it.
Did you run the cam in properly on the last rebuild?
Cheers...Dave

ouch. Rocker gear banging wouldn't have sounded like pinging. It would have been banging quite loudly. I've broken rocker gear in my prior engine due to poor machine work. It sounded real nasty. Redid the machine work and never touched the rocker gear for |
