Hi all, Well due to all my front floor rails being rusted out I have had to pull the complete front end off the EH. I'm looking into getting all the bolts/nuts and maybe most of the front suspension arm's/spring's etc cad platted. I'm driving down for Indy and just after some places around brissy that can do this and is cad the best to use?? Also has anyone used the guy's at Kunda Park electroplating (sunny coast) before? So far their pricing is good for the bumpers etc. Cheer's, Graham.
life's to short not to be....

Hi retro64eh
From what I have seen cad plating looks good but doesn't last as long as chrome plating. so you may find that it will have to be redone a bit sooner that you would expect

There is no cadmium plating. It is nickel plating, and you can get it in a gold, blue or silver tinge to the colour. It lasts longer than chrome plating because most platers don't do chrome plating in the full process. Which is copper, nickel, chrome.

That makes some sense Peter, I was talking to a guy the other day about coating's and cad come up. But after a few phone calls today I think it is the Nickel that I'm after. Just chasing the light gold or dull stainless finnish. Don't want the full chrome

I believe some plating can weaken items like springs etc. be wary.

Also I always thought cadmium plating was done with cadmium not nickel. nickel is usually a silver finish, cadmium a goldy colour

The weakness isn't caused by heat, it is from hydrogen embrittlement and electroplating is a major cause.

Hi all, Yeah there must b a few types of plating out there I've heard the names - Nik-ad, Nike-ad, Nickle and Kad. My assumption would be that there all the same (?) Hydrogen embrittlement hmmm... isnt that Toffee and Peanuts mixed with water.

i can say now if the temptures of the prosseses mentioned are not above the 450-600 degree mark your spings will be fine the steels used common spring steel (5160) are tempered between 450-600 degrees hydrogen emdrittlement is the reason why we quench spr

3 Dueces is correct and I know it is Illegal in VIC to have steering or suspension components done.

damo, that is plain wrong. Your process is carried out to reduce the chance of embrittlement for the work that YOU perform on the steel. It does not protect it from embrittlement caused by later processes such as electroplating where hydrogen is released

Damo,
People tell me a CathodA is something you will never forget...,
So what does the Cathode exactly do in this whole process ?

when johnperth said springs I don't think he was referring to bonnet springs. The parts need to be treated (baked basically) after plating - not before.
